My parents and a sibling live in places where one can do without glass. Shutters are adequate for the rare storms.

(19,564 posts)Which seemed horrifically cold until I saw your temp. Which was actually posted three hours ago, which means it's even colder where you are now. Here I'd thought I'd finally accumulated to the cold, but no, I guess I'm still a total lightweight when it comes to cold weather.

I have to work in Spain tomorrow, and due to reduced winter flight schedules, I have to fly down there this evening and spend the night. My wife, who usually is not a fan of one-day trips, accepted my invitation to have her join me. I can't imagine why.

Then by mid week back up above freezing. This is the new normal, I guess. A warm week, a cold week, a less warm week, a colder week into winter. And the opposite back out to summer.

(4,465 posts)I'm SO not ready for this! well, at least my body isn't. I did do some DIY insulation so the house isn't drafty and I have my heating blanket on the bed and wood ready for the fire place but OH my god. walking the dog in the early morning and after dark? and going running or hiking? I swear it feels like yesterday I was out there in shorts and tank tops! My body is in shock.
I don't know how you people in the really cold snowy States do it.
RiffRandell
(5,909 posts)I'm from CT and miss the snow but woke up at 5:30 today to let the dog out and start the coffee and was shivering! As soon as the pot made enough for one cup I poured myself one and went back upstairs and got under the warm covers.
One problem is that our house has a 2-story foyer and family room so all the heat rises and it's roasting upstairs and freezing downstairs.
My neighbor told me to shut the vents upstairs and that will help (her brother works for a heating and air company) but also our windows need to be replaced as they are so damn drafty!
Raffi Ella
(4,465 posts)Two story foyer with a boiling upstairs, if I'm cold downstairs all I have to do is go upstairs and I'll be hot. lol. It sucks. I do have a few of the vents closed and ceiling fans going to help circulate the air but I think the only thing that would help is replacing the system with a dual one and I can't afford it.
Yeah! GA was literally freezing this morning, ugh. This cold makes me want to hibernate, lol. My fluffy dog just looooooVEs it though. She hates the heat and won't go for long walks in Summer, even in the early morning and evening but now that it's cold and I can't stand it she's like "let's go another mile!" I think she's half the reason I stay in relatively good shape during the Winter.
I would never make it in CT, seriously.

(30,947 posts)I would rather have freezing 30s in the winter than sweltering 90s in the summer. I grew up and lived in Miami most of my life, and I hated the heat and humidity. I am so glad to live somewhere that has actual seasons and not just constant summer.

(35,015 posts)It's rainy instead. We haven't been above 40 degrees since Friday morning and it'll be like this through Tuesday. Very unusual for this time of year. I'm loving it though - have been able to use my fireplace all weekend, making chili today.
susanr516
(1,425 posts)It hasn't gone over 50 since Friday. I am freezing. We have an old house; the only heat is from a couple of small electric heaters. Normally, we don't have to use heaters before Jan. Even then, it's usually only below 50 for a couple of days. I can't remember when it's been so cold for so long in November. I would die if I lived someplace really cold, lol.
