(1,957 posts)For those that still exist I loved Chutes and Ladders, Stadium Checkers, Chinese Checkers,Sorry,Monopoly. Then I can barely remember a couple others like Winner Spinner and one called Hollywood that had game cards of speed boats and money. It was all good fun and where even the grandparents could play along. Far too many games today are fast paced requiring fast hands or way too complicated for someone to grasp the rules in just a few minutes.

(9,888 posts)The only game of any sort that can turn me into a snarling, mouth-frothing, teeth-snapping, jugular-grabbing maniac. I'd try to stomp a baby AND a kitten if they played Risk opposite me. And anyone who thinks they can hold Europe is the first to go.

Keep your base instincts in check. Lead with your ego.
Negotiate yourself some relief. Paint the board your color, but not into the corner.

I love Risk.

(26,117 posts)My little sister and I would play it for hours!
We had Mousetrap in my classroom in 3rd grade - we would get to play with it when we had indoor recess due to bad weather. I LOVED that game - it seemed so elaborate!
We also had Cootie - a classic! They redesigned it later; I like the original version better.
My older sister had the Monkees game (the little plastic guitar is in a drawer somewhere at my mom's).
...and the Barbie game - nobody ever wanted Poindexter as their boyfriend! (I got a reproduction set a few years ago, and now I play it with my daughter).

(27,677 posts)Monopoly, though the games would descend into chaos and fighting. Greed is good...
Panzerblitz:
Risk, of course. Which ruined Monopoly for me because conquering the world was more fun:
I picked up Go in college. It's 2,500 years old so that's about as retro as it gets.

(25,816 posts)It's not as complex as GO, but with a good opponent, you can nearly fill the board. Five stone can be a very fun game.
pokerfan
(27,677 posts)It only has two rules, after all.
Rule 1: (the rule of liberty) states that every stone remaining on the board must have at least one open "point" (an intersection, called a "liberty" directly next to it (up, down, left, or right), or must be part of a connected group that has at least one such open point ("liberty" next to it. Stones or groups of stones which lose their last liberty are removed from the board.
Rule 2: (the "ko rule" states that the stones on the board must never repeat a previous position of stones. Moves which would do so are forbidden, and thus only moves elsewhere on the board are permitted that turn.
But the games can be long. For a shorter game, try playing on a 9×9 or 13×13 board instead of the usual 19×19. For players of vastly different abilities, it's easy to handicap Go.

(14,400 posts)In high school I had a friend with it and we played some epic games. The one I remember went on for hours only to have me win by hitting a half-track with a really low chance shot from a howitzer. He never forgave me and we never forgot it.

(27,677 posts)That changed once I got to college and moved into the dorms....

(38,958 posts)Btw, your Panzerblitz photo appears to be MBT if I am correct, but the point is well made.
pokerfan
(27,677 posts)I was looking for an representative image and grabbed one that looked right. Oddly enough I never played MBT. I had Panzerblitz, Panzer Leader, Squad Leader, Arab Israeli Wars, Starship Troopers, D-Day, Platoon, etc. After a while, they start to look the same.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)Played Panzerblitz, Panzer Leader & Squad Leader (although not much as I wandered off into 285th miniatures by that time using W.R.G. rules).

Billionaire The Board Game:
Stock Ticker Board Game:
And of course the classic original Battleship:
I just love Dad and Son enjoying a well earned break playing the game while Mom and Daughter finish up those pesky dinner dishes with smiles on their faces knowing the men folk are relaxing.

(22,434 posts)SOOOO much fun to send people back!
One of the Chinese exchange students we were lucky enough to
host L-O-V-E-D playing this game. Given a choice of activities, she
would run to get this game down.
She was raised to be SO polite and SO cooperative, but nothing made
her happier than to send one of us back to start, laughing, covering her
mouth with her hand and saying "Sorry, honorable host father!"

(38,958 posts)and it was my hobby from the early 1970's, loved board games and miniatures, I have just been cleaning out the closets of the remainders and a trip down memory lane. Culling the herd right now and saving a few for time in retirement which is hopefully coming in a few years.
Had a great time with many a SPI, AH, Mayfair, GDW & GRD title.
