Man GD is getting ugly...

Just served on a jury for a back and forth series of ugly exchanges. I felt strongly one way and voted so, I won't go into any details. But it seems every 2nd thread in there is turning into name calling. Again I didn't see the blame evenly spread around on this one, and often don't for many of the discussions. But either way it's getting unfriendly in there. I would post in there regularly otherwise, as it is I rarely ever stray outside the Lounge and a few other groups.

about academia, that the politics are so vicious because the stakes are so small. On the internet in general you see so much energy (mental and emotional) expended in board/group wars and flamefests - battles for turf and message control and to get posts deleted, threads locked, opponents banned. Teams chosen, and enemies snarked at and antagonized.

I assume there are people who enjoy those things, but I imagine they generally would be in the troll and/or sociopath categories. For most people, it really doesn't look like a lot of fun. And there really aren't any stakes to be 'won'...

You're absolutely right that people just chew one another up rather than having actual discussions about things. Every now and then I get all activated by something and wade in, as with the sexual harassment OP I put up today about the 6 year old. But I won't fight in it. Sadly, others are perfectly happy to do it for me.

There are some apparently pretty habitually enraged people, for sure. And I like the saying about academia. It's true!

It's a little dicey to claim you have expertise in a highly charged area but now and then I can't help it.

Thanks.

I mean, the crazed, hysterical responses I get over there when I point out some good solid medical science is not to be believed...

Every time it happens, I swear I'll never go over there and post something that might rattle their cages. And then someone pops up, claiming that antibiotics can cure her virus, or something, and I forget myself and jump in.

I always end up regretting it, and I always end up trying again on another thread...

The vast majority of my times as a juror have been two people arguing back and forth until one finally alerts on the other. It's annoying.

I swore it off a long time ago. While I miss the flow of news, I don't miss the viciousness of many of the comments. And if anyone's looking for justice from a jury, think again. A particular misogynist sailed free after calling me a Fecal Cranium.

Really?

I've visited message boards that make GD look like love fest. The rules here are pretty tight. I've served on juries and I tend to be pretty liberal too. Something has to be outrageoulsy offensive for me to vote to hide it. I always post my reasons too.

Didn't mean to imply that sort of thing happens ALL the time. And I try not to be too sensitive, but Fecal Cranium is way too much for me to let pass. Who knows, maybe the jurors were partly his friends and my enemies. At least it wasn't unanimous, I'm glad of that.
