but are there any drinks that even combine vodka and tequila? I usually think of them as "either or", not "and".

And the real question is: If they are mixing two things to make one - is either of the two things top shelf? There's a big difference between Vodquila made with Popov and Jose Quervo and Vodquila made with Reyka small batch and Herradura Reposada...

I would suspect that most of them are designed to get you inebriated as quickly as possible which seems to be the point of the aforementioned spirit.

gentlemanly sipping...I've never had a Long Island Iced tea but I've heard about them lol...It's only been recently I've allowed myself to drink mixed drinks...for a long time I maintained a straight "neat or GTFO" mentality but I got tired of not having any fun and I also took a good critical look at myself and realized I was being a dick about it...so I'll have a white Russian on occasion or a Margarita on the rocks but I still try to buy higher quality spirits to put in them.

And nothing needs to go in my Laphroaig so I can still have my neat and mixed drinks too.

They are basically just a mix of 5 different liquors and a splash of coke. If you will drink a margarita, it's worth a try.

I don't know why I was being such an ass about it earlier in my life - I think I blame fundamentalist religious upbringing. Once I figured out they were full of shit I could start looking at all the stuff they taught.

that there is a terrible idea, good sir. There's a reason why the only three recipes I can recall calling for both are LI Iced Tea, a certain house recipe for Jungle Juice and something I was served in a skull chalice called "Fuck You Juice" that smelled like gasoline and stole an entire week's worth of memory.

I have better ideas that I will give you (or anybody else bold enough to take the idea and run with it) one for free...because I have no use for half the ideas I have.

There is a trend for home soda fountains (the most popular brand is SodaStream but there are other competitors in the market) being driven by the desire by consumers to control what they consume and lessen sugar/HFCS consumption. There is a huge market that remains entirely untapped for syrups for carbonated mixers, particularly high-quality syrups or organic syrups (SodaStream makes a tonic mix but it's sold almost nowhere and it's of similar quality to store-brand tonic even as their other syrups are of a quality rivaling national brands or are licensed national brands), because the companies making the fountains don't want their brands linked to alcohol consumption.

There's no requirement to license your brand to SodaStream or anybody else though...technically, your end-customer could just as easily take your product (for example, an organic tonic syrup made with real sugar or natural low-cal sweeteners) and mix it into an off-the-shelf bottle of club soda.

The Major's Tonic syrup...could be you. Or half-n-half. Or Tom Collins mix. etc. Feel free to invent your own and the recipes to go with them. Along those lines, when I was with a certain coffee company, we sold ourselves a bottle of melon syrup that mixed with club soda to make a melon soda that went so well with saké and a garnish of fresh raspberries in a cocktail glass. It never had a name, but that too you can have.

1.5oz dry saké (chilled)
3oz melon soda (1 part melon syrup, 4 parts club soda. chilled)
4 raspberries skewered on a tooth pick

Mix saké and melon soda in chilled cocktail glass. Stir and garnish with raspberry skewer. Actually name it the Channing. After me. That's my reward. I'm now the namesake of a delightful fruity sophisticated cocktail.

It's called a CO2 bottle.

However, I am no fan of cocktails so I'm probably not the best one to test such an idea. I do mix them occasionally for the benefit of family and friends, but even with the promise of free booze it might be difficult to round up enough for the testing phase. I would think that after 2 you'd reach the point of diminishing returns with the test staff.

Vodka has the flavor of alcohol and, ideally, nothing else. That's why it's so popular: put it in fruit juice and you've got fruit juice that makes you dizzy with no other flavors to intrude on your sensory experience.

I could see using this as a mixer in something like a tequila sunrise for people who only want a little tequila flavor but don't want to only get a little drunk.

Even top shelf vodkas do have unique flavors. When only half is ethanol the other half is where the character comes in. Vodka can be produced from a number of different plants (potato, corn, wheat, etc.) and each have a different character in the finished product. Cheap vodkas may have a distinct alcohol taste but that's usually from alcohol by-products and not the ethanol itself. Since it's nearly impossible to distill pure ethanol, there will always be other alcohol by-products and in the case of cheap vodka(and often expensive vodkas that comes in snazzy bottles) these will be strong enough to overpower the other subtle flavors that come through with better vodkas.
