I'm speaking of the middle eastern side dish.
I've always pronounced it #2 but I notice a lot of people use #1.

(34,095 posts)is how it is pronounced around here but this is Kansas and we don't care how things are supposed to be pronounced, we pronounce everything Merican. Fuck yeah!
Seriously, I do not know any other way. This is the only way I have ever heard it pronounced.

(22,678 posts)So I'm guessing that's the correct way.

(34,095 posts)I guess we are not always just plain stupid here, lol
Good to know.

(8,492 posts)...a retching sound followed by gagging would be close to the correct pronunciation, imo.

(19,358 posts)I was going to say the correct pronunciation is "buick", but I believe yours is much more accurate.

(78,249 posts)sometimes huumus. The Kansan is correct; both are pronounced "hum us (a little tune)".
Humus (hugh-mus) is a type of soil.

(8,217 posts)It is good as an additive, but as a dip... -shudders- Smells like rank armpit. Made my eyes water the first time I tried it.

(22,678 posts)I call Cumin "The Armpit spice" because right out of the container, that's what it smells like to me.
Cooked into a dish and it's wonderful.
All by itself, and you are standing in the disrobing room of a Turkish Bathhouse.
Don't ask how I know this.

(23,340 posts)She puts tons of garlic and lemon in it, and it is great with fresh pita bread, or on carrot sticks or celery.
We discovered some new tahini at a local ethnic market that really stepped up the flavor, too. They had nine types to choose from!
It is both very healthy and very delicious, like many Middle Eastern salads and appetizers.

(6,154 posts)Like you, heavy on the garlic and lemon. Probably heavier on the lemon than it is usually traditionally made. But I love that sour, acidic bite. Yeah Tahini is a must, wow 9 different types!
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)but I love it. Even though it's not traditional, I guess, there's a cool Mediterranean cafe near work that will spread it on the pita before building my gyro.
But I'll sit and intend to eat a few pita chips and look down and realize the whole damn bowl is gone.
I really should try making some - I eat it too much to keep buying it...
