WHAT HAPPENED TO EAR MUFFS?

A comedian once said that ear muffs are the dumbest thing ever invented, because the fluffy, warm part is on the outside while a cold metal band is against your ears.

Nowadays it's hard to find ear muffs. They've been replaced with something called ear warmers, which go around the back rather than over the top. Ear warmers are okay if you are not also wearing a hat, something you might want to do on cold days. If you wear both you will notice that the ear warmers either line up with the bottom of the hat or overlap it by one-eighth of an inch, just enough to move the hat every time you look up, or down, or sideways, and drive you crazy.

If it's windy, which can happen during the winter, your hat may blow off and into a snow bank - something that was less likely in the days of over-the-top ear muffs.

You might be able to find some ear muffs on line, with a cheap plastic band replacing the cold metal. These are less comfortable than the old ear muffs because, while the cheap plastic isn't cold, it's not as adjustable.

One solution is stereo headphones that cover the ears. While you've avoided headphones in the past because they make your ears hot in the spring, summer, and fall, they are just right for the winter. You can get them as cheap as $5.00 and listen to NPR while you stay warm and keep your hat on.

That's the best solution I can think of. I'm hopeful that with improvements in technology, someone, someday, will be able to design ear muffs with the warm fluffy part on the inside and the cold metal band on the outside.

It gets below freezing here in winter but never low enough that you usually think of needing ear muffs.

It is surprising to me that they keep my whole head nice and toasty - even in the coldest weather. Love 'em!

... Interesting comment about the "big Welsh head." Merv Griffin used to describe his head that way.

The inventor of the earmuff, Chester Greenwood, has an annual day and parade dedicated to him in his (our) hometown, Farmington, Me. (He also invented the spring rake among many other things.)
