Hint: The only acceptable answer is Carmex. I like the squeezable tube for personal use and the tin for sharing.

(3,414 posts)Camphor is good as it prevents/treats cold sores. It is a major ingredient in campho-phenique. I'll pick up a tube and try it. Thanks for the rec.

(39 posts)Huge fan. Keep the chapstick type in the car.
Use the gel kind constantly, (actually sitting right next to me) and the tin is handy to share or put an swipe of it when I walk out of the door in the morning.
Another one of my lip favorites.. Campho Phenique (damn these cold sores).. . stings like a mofo at first, but it sure does work!

(60,010 posts)diet contributes to them, I found out.
Look up L-lysine for cold sores.
And yep, Carmex works very well.
but so does Vicks Vapo rub..tis the menthol in it that dries out the sore.

(585 posts)Chapstick is too hard, and I've never used Carmex. I like Avon's lip balms because they're softer & easier to apply.

(11,360 posts)A few years ago, I decided that, if I will be tasting this stuff two or three times a day, I should find some with a flavor I actually like. I now use the ginger and lemon flavored stuff with a badger on the label. It works just as well, and tastes a whole lot better.

(50,553 posts)Wanna know how I know? Go to the house of a Carmex user and you'll find AT LEAST a dozen containers of this stuff, no less than one per room. That's not because they misplace their Carmex, but because they want it right there the second they need it.
It's not the (nonexistent) ground glass or whatever that's supposed to be in there, it's the menthol-camphor-phenol mixture they readily admit is in there. It does two things: gives your lips a tingly feeling, and partially exfoliates them. When the tingling wears off...a quick dip into the Carmex pot brings it right back.

(25,586 posts)I only need it a few times a year, and three or four applications seems to fix me right up. I don't know if it actually is any different in reality, but in my mind it works a charm.
Chapstick does literally nothing at all for my lips except leave them feeling all gross and gummy, and Carmex just tastes like shit.
