Are you discouraged from replying to a post...

That already has 100+ replies?
I am.

I may have something really brilliant to say (IMHO ), but I figure the OP will never see it and it'll just get lost in the scrum.

If it's a request for help or info, and I think I can be of some assistance, I'll PM.

Anybody feel the same?

I hate making a fool of myself, and I do that so often anyway.

I do it all the time. Which is why it is a great idea to post in those huge threads---no one will read it.

Actually, I will usually forget about posting in a thread with too many posts. But I still insist on making a fool of myself sometimes. And of all people, you rarely do that.

As such, I kinda preferred DU2's approach that let you look at the thread without necessarily loading all the replies if there were more than 20. Not a deal-breaker, though.

or idea I had has already been expressed by the time I've formulated my
post then I don't post.

Sometimes it takes me a while to read 100 posts and I miss out
on posting.

I excuse myself from juries that have that many replies, too. I don't like wading through all the muck to get a feel for the thread.

I have trouble loading big threads but if it gets my attention somehow and there is something I want to add or say or laugh at I just do it. But then I am that obnoxious person who will butt into the conversation you are having with the check-out person too

I think you have it right - the OP will never see it as it will be lost in the scrum - but I think this is just a realistic view of human nature.

Anyway, I don't bother because I think it is a waste of energy. Energy which I do not possess in unlimited amounts.

People get nasty on this site. I've been called a troll for trying to be the voice of reason in a particularly heated thread. So I kinda don't say much anymore.

i go days, weeks, and most often months in between replies typically.
i just happen to have a wild hair up my ass for some unapparent reason, hence this reply.

but yes, i will not bother replying at all once there are that many replies.
i'd be arrogant to think that if at that point i would be so wise and intelligent as to have something so groundbreaking to say that somehow no one else has thought of it before, or hasn't said already.

1)More people click on bigger threads to see what the fuss is about.

2)People are egotistical...they want to check if anyone responded to them. The bigger the thread, the more egos, the more people will check the thread, the better your chance of being read.

3) The bigger the thread, the greater the chance of a stupid controversy. Even an innocuous statement may start a flame. Posting something small in a big thread, you'll have a better chance of starting a flame war and getting your stuff read.

4) Truth be told, unless the topic is really interesting, I don't usually click on smaller threads. A fire by the comment means I'm totally checking it out, even if it's a topic I'm not interested in.

5)Bigger thread, more rec, better chance at greatest threads, better chance the thread will be exposed to more people, better chance of your comment being read and responded too.
