The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsShitty songs that you know are shitty that you (secretly?) like..even though they are shit.
I'm old, so my secretly liked shitty songs live in the eighties and seventies:
Wounded Bear

(2,201 posts)...and beat the hell out my recliner. I love that tune...even though it's shitty.
Wounded Bear

(5,604 posts)I fail to see anything wrong with Kung Fu Fighting. In fact one day it will be our global national anthem.
Terry Jacks, on the other hand, should have been put to death in a North Korean way for making me cry. Repeatedly. Fucker.... I miss my dog.

(20,582 posts)I used to sneak it from my sister's room and play it over and over - til I sccrrratched the heck out of it by accident and had to buy her a new one, but I wasn't old enough to babysit or anything yet so had to sell some of my stuff to my brother the blackmailer
Frank Cannon
(7,570 posts)When I got dumped by a girl once in college, I came home and played it 20 times in a row full-blast. Drove my hallmates crazy.
True fact: Terry Jacks didn't intend to release the song at first. His paperboy came by to collect on his monthly bill, liked the song that Jacks just happened to be playing, and invited his friends over to listen to it. Jacks was so encouraged by their response that he went ahead and released it. The rest, as they say, is history. It was one of the best-selling songs of 1974.
polly7
(20,582 posts)I was just little, but remember we used to sing it on the school bus all the time ... we drove the boys and our bus-driver crazy.
Mister Ed
(5,928 posts)We were streaking in the sun
But the cops, they had guns
And they shot us in the buns
Rowdyboy
(22,057 posts)There...I admitted it! Maybe it is silly and childish but I like her. Listening to her is a little like drinking champagne.....
Glorfindel
(9,726 posts)It's a great song, it's happy, and makes one feel better for having heard it! Not silly at all.

(23,208 posts)musically, it sucks, but I still like it (though not in heavy doses....)
Captain Stern
(2,201 posts)Very sad. When I first heard it, I thought it might be about a teenage girl running away from home. Very moving. Then, I found it was about an Irish Setter that got washed out to sea (brian wilson's?). That made it even sadder.
Regardless, it's definitely a shitty song that I love.
NMDemDist2
(49,313 posts)i really really tried to like that song, since it's my name
but no... couldn't quite get there
kwassa

(28,552 posts)... so my example is from the sixties.
Now, I wouldn't call this song shitty as much as I would ... well .... maybe a bit sappy.
Anyway, this popped into my head a few weeks ago after not hearing it since it was on airplay in 1967. I have no idea why.
It is a seriously happy song!

(34,049 posts)i remember riding bikes (in the street) with a friend and we were singing this song as loud as we could on a nice summer day (no hands on the handlebars!)
it was enough of a memorable moment that i took it with me for all these years, since 1969.
(little did i realize, in that minute or two of happiness and exhilaration, that i was in the process of creating an unforgettable memory--that's kinda cool actually)
Art_from_Ark
(27,247 posts)It was on the juke box at the public pool. And I used to sing songs on summer days while riding with no hands on a "Buzz bike", but I can't remember if I sang that one or not

(95,337 posts)Geraldo - "Rico Suave"
BTW Geraldo trivia - that wasn't his hair - he was wearing a wing
Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam - "I wonder if I take you home"
I think this was the the theme song in college!
Barry Manilow - "I Write the Songs"
No one writes them better than Barry Manilow
Apache (Jump On It) - Sugar Hill Gang
Makes Kung Fu Fighting look politically correct
Getting Jiggy With it - Will Smiith
Yeah I got jiggy with it a few times in the 90s!
And the one song guarenteed to cost me my DU Cool Points.....
Yes Creed was a Pearl Jam/Soundgarden rip-off and yes every Creed song seemed to start with that same epic intro that made their songs start out douchier than ever and yes their so-called 'Christian Band' stance was a lot of bull and yes Scott Stapp is the biggest douchebag asshole out there but there was something catchy about this song that I liked anyways!
