I'd recommend it. The book, as usual, is better.

I first recognized him by the way he ran. "Look, he runs just like Garp!"

I had thought it was something he had put on for the character in the movie. No, that was just the way he runs. His hands flop a lot as he runs.

On later encounters, I chatted with him a bit.

The Cider House Rules is really good, too. The movie didn't do it justice.

I also liked A Prayer for Owen Meany. Apparently there is a movie version, but I never saw it.

For some reason I got away from reading John Irving's books, though.

I can't remember the name of the movie, but "Owen Meany" isn't part of it. Which ought to tell you something. John Irving's novels deserve a lot better screen treatment than they've received.....

I enjoyed it, it reminds me of modern day Alexander Payne movies in that it is funny and tragic.
