drink. I saved up for a blender. I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow to get flax seed, kale, coconut milk, blueberries, parsley, bananas and green apples that I can portion out and freeze. What ingredients am I missing?

(8,646 posts)especially if I'm making a green smoothie - the raspberries are genius for covering up the taste of spinach, for instance. I use frozen ones because they are cheaper. Also, adding grated or frozen shredded ginger - you can buy the little frozen cubes - will give your smoothie a nice kick.
One of my favorite combinations is coconut water and pineapple (maybe a few raspberries thrown in for color). It's like dessert.
Enjoy your new blender! I freaking love mine (I managed to save up for a vitamix, best. kitchen. purchase. ever.)

(8,646 posts)I managed to burn my way through 3 of them in 10 years before deciding I was going to splurge for the vitamix. There's not even a comparison with the cheap ones. What a difference. Wish I had bought a vitamix years ago. It's so nice to make smoothies that are smooth, and that don't get 'stuck' and need a spoon to unstick the big pieces...
And it makes wicked sauces and so easily. There's a sesame rice sauce I make and I used to have to grind the sesame seeds first, then take them out, then mix the other ingredients really well, then put the sesame seeds back in. With the vitamix, it all goes in together, and I get an even better, smoother sauce and no need to grind the seeds first. Super handy.

(46,436 posts)We have smoothies every morning for breakfast, sometimes vegetable, sometimes fruit. You can use spinach with just about everything...the flavor blends right in. Carrots and oranges go well together. Also beets and cherries. Experiment. It's fun.
