I have been a trucker for 17 years and for almost every trucking company I've worked for they've always wanted you rolling, even in a snow storm. Note I said "almost." The people I currently work for have some sense about them and will delay or cancel work in the event of a winter storm. So the first chapter in the Adventures of Tobin is kind of a dud. This is what it looks like outside my door today:
They told me to just stay home.

(149,298 posts)Well, now that you can relax and enjoy it, have a great day! It sure is pretty...
Especially since you don't have to drive in it!

(30,656 posts)I received several books for Christmas, and I am reading a lot.
I work only as a substitute teacher now, but if I don't have to go out, I won't. We live in the country, on a hill. We could plow every twenty minutes, and the driveway would still drift shut. A couple of sub callers are pissed off at me, but I don't care. All of December was bad here, and the new year is no better.
You are fortunate to have an employer who is so sensible. Too many of us know harrowing stories about truckers who have had trouble out in the bad weather. It is not worth it!
Read a book. Listen to some music. Enjoy your time at home.
I hate to lose a day's pay, but when I look at the risk of the alternative, you're right, it's worth it. I've seen too many bad wrecks in my time due to weather conditions. I also do most of my driving on rural roads where it would probably take a lot longer for emergency personnel to get to me if something bad did happen. And on a day like today, if I wasn't dead when they got there they might just kill me and say I was.
