Often derided as a mediocre science fiction film by reviewers.

Its reputation was enhanced by the reputedly terrible remake.

But I think the original is a masterful piece of social and corporate satire, and also a penetrating allegory about the individual versus the collective.

Since the collective in this case is an evil, power-mad corporation, I'm okay rooting for the individual in this instance.

And it really showcased James Caan's acting chops. Although he played a bruising action role, the contrast with Sonny Corleone, for example, is actually striking.

When Caan's character, Jonathan E is not on the game track, he is quiet, thoughtful, contemplative, even gentle. No morbid, cocky one-liners, no sneering in the face of danger, no un-earned aura of invincibility. Just a solid acting performance.

Saw it at a theater that serves good food and craft beer - it's the only way to see a movie that doesn't require a large, high tech modern screen for all the explosions.

I liked it, nobody else I know who saw it did.

I saw it in the theatre with a coworker on a kind-a-sorta date but not really...we were establishing that we were better as friends. She picked the movie; we were both writers, it seemed like a good choice. I dunno, the movie was slow in parts...but the ending where they hanged Perry Smith traumatized her horribly. Nobody else that I know who saw it liked it very much either.

It wasn't until later that I found out she didn't know the real story, the movie leaves Smith's repeated claims of innocence kind of open...where reality borne out that he, not Hickcock, was the primary killer and the stronger partner of the murderous tandem.

Being old enough to remember Capote's appearances on TV, I was really impressed by Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance. I can also remember when In Cold Blood was THE book to read, although strangely, I have never read it.

Maybe it's a sign of age, but I like seeing "period" movies that depict events during my lifetime.

possibly one of the first & one of the few movies that talk about life after life (the tunnel, meeting loved ones, the light) which is based on near-death experiences.

"Ellen Burstyn experiences the afterlife for a brief time after a car accident that kills her husband. As she begins her long process of physical healing, she discovers that she has the ability to heal physical infirmities."

Sun Jan 5, 2014, 02:15 AM
Jan 2014

Very, very slapstick, but it's slapstick that you've never seen before.

The Long Day Closes (1992) is a movie in which "nothings happens," except that it's director Terence Davies filming his disjointed memories and childhood fantasies growing up in 1950s England, accompanied by period songs. If you can let go of any expectations and just drift along with the scenes, it's a powerful experience. (I saw it with a group, and about half the people hated it, because they were waiting for a plot.)

No clip. I couldn't find one with good picture quality that wasn't the whole movie.

Whiskey Galore (1949)--This British comedy is not very P.C. these days, but it's about a Scottish island that is suffering from a whiskey shortage during World War II. Then a ship carrying whiskey runs aground on rocks near the island. Gordon Jackson (Hudson on the original Upstairs Downstairs) plays a man who is afraid of his mother.

I ran across the title in a list of 100 movies that everyone should watch.
It is very slow moving, depressing and unforgettable. At the end, if you can
make it that far...you find out that it is based on a real incident.
