The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsTwo days from now, my dear friends, I will need your vibes and support...Yes, for another operation.
Just like a year ago, when I had my right shoulder replaced, now it's time for the damaged left one to go.
So, Tuesday morning, I will be under the surgeon's knife once again...
It's full of bony spurs and the cartilage is completely gone. This sucker hurts!
I would not wish this on anyone...
I thank all of you for standing by me now...

But it doesn't last forever, and then you get back to normal!
And best of all? The pain is gone.

CaliforniaPeggy
(149,534 posts)Yeah, the recovery isn't fun. But at least I will have my dominant hand free.
And it doesn't last forever, even though it feels like it!
But at least the pain I have now will vanish, and boy am I ever ready for that!

And thank you, for keeping the faith , and being you.

I hope you will soon be healed and pain-free too...

Best wishes for it to go well.
P.S.--Whatever you do, don't take any advice from MFM. Not unless you want to get blacklisted by the nursing staff.

(149,534 posts)Once per joint is enough, maybe!
It should go well, if past history is any guide...

Mr s4p! Mr s4p! Do you know where we are?
Then I heard myself tell her I'd just had surgery and if she was lost she needed to find somebody else to ask for help
Please sail thru it swimmingly, CaliforniaPeggy!

CaliforniaPeggy
(149,534 posts)I too hope for good health!
What's happening with my shoulder is not really a complication, but rather the result of genetics. In other words, the lousy joints seem to run in my family.
Great.
At least I can do something about it. Shoulder replacements are a fairly recent development and they work much better than they did, say, 10 years ago. At least my timing is good!

(34,131 posts)Last year when I was in rehab after my knee replacements, one of the patients who had PT sessions at the same times I did had an early version artificial shoulder. All the therapists were fascinated with it - he'd had it for 10-15 years. His was a replication of the natural joint but apparently the newer ones reverse the ball and socket instead.
He wasn't in for anything to do with that shoulder that worked very well. He'd been in a bad car accident and had a leg broken in five places as well as a break in the arm without the artificial shoulder. They did not want him using crutches or trying to push himself around in a wheel chair.
Since he lived alone in a second story apartment with no elevator he stayed an extra week in rehab while they tried to find him somewhere to live until his leg healed.
We had some good discussions - he had been a liberal city commissioner. Though I never voted in city elections (I live in the county) I remembered his terms and some of the fights he lead to have a sane development policy locally.
Do you get to go to rehab or do you have to manage at home?
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,534 posts)I have enough range of motion to make me happy, but of course the pain was the big issue. Now it's gone, and that gives me hope!
Your story is fascinating. How cool you got to meet such a cool person.
I will get a little rehab going in the hospital, and then when I go home, I will have at-home PT for several weeks. Once I can drive again, I will go to out-patient PT. I've already picked it out; they treated me for a pinched nerve last summer, and they did an outstanding job.
I'm all set, and boy, am I ever ready!
csziggy
(34,131 posts)I'm fascinated by the shoulder replacement. Since I had one shoulder completely rebuilt and the other cleaned up, I've been concerned about something going wrong with one of them. The surgeon warned me if I do any damage to the rebuilt one, he couldn't fix it again and I would lose the use of that arm - the entire interior of the shoulder joint is scar tissue.
That was over twenty years ago, before shoulder replacement was common so now I wonder if it would be possible to replace it if it goes bad. While I regained 99% functionality and little pain from it, the surgeon scared me so much I gave up ground training of our foals - something that had been one of my favorite things to do.
Take care and keep us updated - we all want you here posting. You're one of the sweetest people here on DU.
