It's dusk here, and a little reddish brown birdie just fussed at me

I was standin on my back deck in the twilight, and birdie flew up onto the porch railing, noticed me, and retreated into the foliage of a shrubby tree nearby

Squawkety! squawkety! squawk!

Squawkety! squawkety! squawk!

And I'm afraid I have some idea why I was fussed at, too

You see, back in the spring, a pretty little carolina wren nested in the fern planter hangin under the eaves behind my back door. I finally learned about the new neighbors when the peepin of hungry chicks from the planter became loud and constant, so I made a real effort not to disturb that site for months after the noise stopped

But a few weeks back, at about 11PM, I thought it must be safe by now to check out the nest remnants under the moss layers, so I peeked into it

Oops! A new tenant had apparently moved in meanwhile -- and was not particularly pleased to find me snooping at the nest opening. A reddish brown blur sped out of the nest, grazing my head as it passed, and soared high up into the trees tops, chattering irritably about how the fuckin neighborhood was fuckin goin downhill, what with everybody stickin their fuckin noses into everybody else's business and such

I felt bad then and apologized but I really couldn't tell if the apology was accepted

Now I'm guessin this was my new tenant, tellin everybody who would listen to watch out cuz the big asshole was out and about again

around twilight and disturbed a whole family of wrens. I knew they hadn't nested there because I had spotted their nest earlier and knew that the chicks had fledged and left a few days before. I started watching the basket and noticed that every evening the wren family was bedding down among the petunias. You could hear them calling back and forth as they approached and checked things out. Then, one by one they would fly to the basket and settle in for the night. This was a nightly occurrence for 2-3 weeks.
