(5,431 posts)The "first crab" is the old shell that the "second crab" has just sloughed off through moulting!

(53,339 posts)My understanding is that crabs molt, shedding their outer shell. The new shell remains soft for a time before it hardens, and crabs harvested at this time can be battered and fried whole and eaten, shell and all. This dish is probably associated most with Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs (I don't now if other crabs are eaten this way).
This is open to correction, as I haven't looked up any actual science-y stuff like facts about this.

(2,805 posts)This is Amin, he's the oldest.

The other crab doesn't have a name and is maybe the size of a golf ball. I am told that Hermit crabs are social beings. Amin is not allowed to have friends. He finds them delicious and not in the David Frost kind of way.
I'm so glad that he moults under the sand and eats his old self out of sight. They are not the most attractive looking creatures especially when you see their bottom as they change shells...bleech!
But then again, I'm not a crab and maybe his pale looking rear quarters might actually be really sexy...or not.
