When is the best Time to go grocery shopping?

I never know when its a good time to hit up the local SAFEWAY. Last time there were lines so long it took 30 minutes to get to the cashier. When is the best time?

to a 24 hour grocery store. Not a fan of the daytime noise and bustle.

I almost considered it. But that is too seasonal. On Saturday Night and Fridays people hit the store to have stuff for Football Sundays. I have been on a Sunday during the Football season and the stores were nearly dead, if say, the game started at 1pm.. or an early morning game. But what do you do the rest of the year after the Superbowl is over. (Superbowl Sundays the shops are dead after the first quarter of the game.)

During baseball season, this does not apply for some reason.

Everyone is in church.
There is no traffic.
There are no lines in the stores.
In the summer it is cooler at that hour.

but by 12 noon, when the churches empty out, everyone heads for buffet lunches and the stores, instant mob.

Usually, that's between about 1 am and 6 am. Later in the morning is best if you are doing any produce shopping, while earlier in the morning there aren't as many restockers there yet, though stock may be placed in the aisles.

And if it bothers you, at those hours there will be no harried parents and their children

My Safeway has no fewer than SIX self-checkouts, and sometimes they can become very crowded.

I have to plan my trips so it's not morning rush-hour, not afternoon school adjournment, not Wed. mornings because the senior centers around my neighborhood take their members to the store, and it can become a bit crowded. Nor do I go at night because I guess I watch too many "48 Hours" episodes. And Saturday mornings/afternoons are a nightmare!

I know: Life can be tough

That's when I go. They have finished stocking their shelves for the payday rush, and since it's the day before payday no one has any money left so they DON'T go to the store. Proper money management makes all the difference.

For me, that's produce and the local store does their manager's specials on Tuesday so the best time is Tuesday around 5am as that's when it hits the floor and there are no customers so I can get in-and-out and get the choice picks.

For most people, that most expensive department is meat. Go when the meat discount occurs (which will always be first thing in the morning for the open, or at the end of the overnight shift in a 24-hour store.) and you can stock up at about half-price, cheaper if you buy larger packs, break-down the packs into single-serving sizes and freeze them. (Also, it's cheaper if you buy a whole chicken or roast and cut it to single-serving usually.)

Safeway was not too bad... and I only had 150 dollars to shop with, managed to spend only 87 dollars. Not even sure how that happened.

The supermarket in my hometown is huge and there is rarely a problem with crowds. So when I'm back in town, I pop in whenever I'm in the area to look for bargains on things that I would buy anyway.

In Japan, I sometimes wait until a little before closing to see if any of the perishables I usually buy are marked down. Sunday afternoons are usually crowded, though, so I try to avoid that time.

I'm generally walking out the door, completed by 8 a.m.

Overnight stock is complete, the daily fresh stuff is just out and nary an individual in sight.

Perfect.

When do the sales start? Those days are usually pretty busy. And, the day after is just as bad, because the stores are usually out of the sale items. Mornings are not always great, because, at least in my town, the aisles are cluttered with people stocking shelves--something they should be doing BEFORE the store opens. And, the worst day to shop is whatever day is Senior Discount Day. Avoid the stores like the plague on Senior Discount Day.

But, the first thing on Sunday morning is generally the best time if you don't like crowds. You might find they're out of sale items, however.

I find Sunday morning is nearly deserted at Safeway and Fred Meyer, and as I never, ever, ever shop at Wal-Mart, Sunday AM it is for us

I'm usually shopping for staples (flour, yeast, salt, sugar, laundry detergent, etc.) and I always, always, make them give up a rain check if they don't have the advertised items in stock - whether the items will "be there Monday" or not! Don't let 'em cheat!

Sunday mornings are good because many people are at church, but I prefer Tuesday morning because the store is more likely to have everything in stock. I mostly shop at Aldi and the worst times to go there are Saturdays and weeknights after work. However the worst time to go to Aldi is the beginning of the month when SNAP benefits come.
