The excellence of the contents was matched by the squared bottle he used, with 'Eixir' embossed on the sides.

I don't make it - no room here to do so, but I know it uses coffee beans and Everclear. If I can find it (somewhere in the annals of my 900 cookbooks), I'll post it for you. Beats store-bought hands down!

What made it special to me was that my teacher made it himself, and that he chose such a special bottle for it.

I was away from there and out of contact with him for a long time, but I attended his 80th birthday party--which HE threw for US on a yacht, at his expense. That's the kind of guy he was.

Teachers like that are why I refuse to stop learning. At least, until it comes to string theory; when it comes to strings, I listen to my cats........

I think it's in the 1942 Good Housekeeping Cookbook that my mother-in-law left me when she died in 2000. It was one she got for herself when she and my father-in-law were first married; I keep all my special and heirloom-type recipes in it. I wrote your DU name down (see, still a newbie) so I can 'tag' you when I locate it!

Then maybe you know someone just as special, and find a great bottle, and can pay it forward!

And yes, pay it forward. My teacher, Gene Friedman, was a vey special guy--and he will always have a memorial in my heart.

My main cookbook is a very old hardcover of Joy of Cooking. I probably should update it...

Feel free to print/share/whatever. Jim wouldn't mind at all. We all call it Crawford Kahlua.

1 12-cup pot of very strong coffee (does not have to be hot, flavored coffee is ok)
2 lbs. light brown sugar
1 fifth bottle of 190-proof Everclear
5 tablespoons vanilla extract (don't use the "flavoring" get the real stuff)
8 - 10 coffee beans
4 vanilla beans, split

In a Dutch oven or large nonmetal pot, bring coffee to a boil. Stirring all the time, add the brown sugar. Return to a full boil. Don't quit stirring. Add coffee and vanilla beans. Once returned to boil, let cool till room temperature. (Stick it in a pan of cold water if you're in a hurry, but make sure it doesn't get diluted.)

When cool, add vanilla and Everclear. Stir. Be sure to take the next step carefully: strain into whatever bottle/bottles you're using. To each bottle, add 1/2 the coffee beans and 1/2 the vanilla beans. Cool completely on counter, then refrigerate.

You're ready to rock and roll. I recommend leaving it in the fridge for 3 or 4 days before using.

Jimmy's no longer with us, so I'm glad I found this! Enjoy!

Although, I swear it - I have bought wines for the names........like Mad Housewife, A Red Wine (total label), Fourplay, Evil Bastard.......... if I had the money and space (700 sf. doesn't work) I'd have a wine storage area just for the giggles.

Unfortunately, it would take up the entire kitchen, bath and part of the living area in my cabin!
