Captain & Tennille Divorcing
Love WON'T Keep Us Together

Say it ain't so ... there's no Muskrat Love left for Captain & Tennille ... they're getting divorced ... and the Captain tells TMZ he didn't see it coming.

Toni (Tennille) filed legal docs in Arizona. They've been married for 39 years.

If you don't know ... you should. They had a string of hits in the 70s, including "Love Will Keep Us Together," "Muskrat Love" and "Do that to Me One More Time."

Daryl Dragon (The Captain) is 71. Yeah, it's Dragon.

Daryl tells TMZ ... "I don't know why she filed. I gotta figure it out for myself first." He also said they're still living together in the same house.

Many, many years ago, I was in the Spirit Room in Jerome, Az, high on acid.
Muskrat Love came on the jukebox. The chirping almost made me insane. I had to go outside.

"Muskrat Love" is a pop song by written by Willis Alan Ramsey depicting a romantic liaison between two anthropomorphic muskrats named Susie and Sam. The song was first recorded by Ramsey himself on his sole album release Willis Alan Ramsey (1972) on which the song was entitled "Muskrat Candlelight" referencing the song's opening lyric. A 1973 cover version by America - re-entitled "Muskrat Love" for the lyrics which close the song's chorus - was a minor hit: a 1976 remake by Captain & Tennille afforded the song its highest profile peaking at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Their music exemplifies for me the breezy sun-drenched pop of the 70's.

Toni Tenille attended dance class with my mother in Montgomery, Alabama when they were both kids.

My dad was totally blindsided by it. But she had put up with his alcoholism and bipolar disorder enough. She told him she would leave if he quit taking his meds and kept drinking. Guess what? He didn't take his meds and he kept on drinking, yet he was shocked when she had the papers served. The Captain may not have seen it coming, but maybe he should have.

If I have to guess, that's the reason. And I have seen her in concert by herself, and she is amazing.

Wish them both the best.
