The only thing I can keep alive are Aloe Vera plants and even those die off at about a year.

My mother couldn't kill a plant if she tried. She said the secret to it was forgetting them. I wish I could but I fuss with them too much. I'm so paranoid about them dying, I'm constantly checking them out for signs of danger and that, I think, is my undoing.

... I'd be afraid of sloshing out with the water over the edge.

I'd have similar concerns about the aquarium.

if I had a cottage to live in.

It's my second choice for ideal living arrangement.

I really think it'd be kind of neat instead to try to acquire a 3-or-4-floor walk-up building in NYC and try to create a kind of intentional cooperative community. One person cooks. One person cleans. There's a chore wheel. A few people garden in the back yard. A few people sell the excess and prepared foods at the farmer's market. People are free to work outside the community for spending money. Meals are in common. Shared common areas. Every gets their own bedroom and bathroom that they have to maintain. I can't see how to get it done and it'd probably go to hell immediately. So it goes.
