Red Alert: I may be submitted to a random drug test tomorrow at work.

Last edited Thu Jan 30, 2014, 06:35 PM - Edit history (1)

I haven't smoked in about 2 weeks. But I'm worried. Will they fire me if I fail?

On edit: I passed the at-home test. I'm probably in the clear.

<30 days for chronic user.

So if you were using frequently up until 2 weeks ago, you could fail. In that situ, it could help to be very well hydrated prior to peeing in the cup, to dilute whatever traces remain.

Otherwise, you should be good. Info above is using the screening test from my lab.

The majority of the metabolites of urine are in the very beginning and end of the urine stream. You want to take your sample, mid-stream.

so if by chance you fail, they may ask if you have taken any medication. You can say you took ibuprofen the night before.

I wouldn't recommend adulterating the sample, but I did just found something very interesting re: visine eyedrops --

http://www.drugcheck.com.au/pdfs/10-Mayo-Clinic-Clinicians.pdf

"People using THC often attempt to manipulate the urine
to produce negative results. Addition of Visine eyedrops to
urine samples has been shown to cause false-negative results
for THC.106

Chemical analysis of Visine eyedrops has
shown that the ingredients, benzalkonium chloride and the
borate buffer, can directly decrease the concentration of 9-
carboxy-THC in the urine with no effects on the antibodies
in the immunoassay.

However, these ingredients do not
chemically alter 9-carboxy-THC, which will still be detected
by GC-MS.106"

GC-MS is gas chromatography, which would be a follow-on confirmatory test, versus a rapid immunoassay.

Had he just tested positive, he might have kept his job, but if you get caught adulterating it's out the door you go.

probably should have left it out altogether. I had something in mind re: follow up to a positive, but can't think of where I was headed....

time consuming, so are reserved to confirm positive screens.

The urine test takes 10 minutes. Anything else is usually a send out to a large reference lab.
