(11,175 posts)There's even a music video, complete with a cute little puppy:
For something more modern, you could go with "Cat Scratch Fever" but then you'd have to pay royalties to the lunatic Ted Nugent. By contrast, Patti Page was honored by the Humane Society for recording a new version, "Do You See That Doggie in the Shelter", encouraging adoptions.
Don't forget, after you've picked your national anthem, you still need the costume to wear while marching into the stadium. Bear in mind that your chosen design will be second-guessed on DU.
Of course, even without all those formalities, you still get the gold medal on DU. Thanks for another great collection!

(5,106 posts)There have long been great, candid photos of family animals. We all have our favorites. With the advent of the digital camera, many of the shots you are lately showing are obviously staged and posed. Sometimes demeaning to the "pet." For some years I worked with an animal rescue group which put out a yearly calendar. We made it clear that we wanted candid shots, and finding such pictures which were also easy to enlarge-at that time- was never easy. My own family favorite, which I couldn't resist showing, but never submitted, knowing it would never enlarge properly was "happiness is a warm gun." My then husband had left a hunting rifle on a guestroom bed. One of our cats( you'd also have to have known to understand that he was a very aggressive male, even after neutering) had curled up within the carrying strap and had actually fallen asleep wrapped around the rifle. Priceless--but only to family and friends.

RL
maddiemom
(5,106 posts)reactions to a simple opinion. Candid shots are always the best AND some set up pics go far beyond pet (or animal companion) dignity. I'll stand by this , even though my daughter once put a tablecloth on her pony and went out trick or treating dressed as a chef. Hah! But I didn't take a picture. (Only of her as a chef; spared the pony's dignity).

passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)As many of the funny photos we see are animals being totally undignified, all by themselves, and seeming to enjoy the hell out of it.
Personally, I don't care for animals dressed up in clothes, but I've never seen a picture of a distressed animal dressed up in clothes. I would think that inappropriate. Otherwise, to each his own. Some people enjoy things I don't. I enjoy things others don't. Please respect the audience here who all love animals, or we wouldn't be here, even though there are different tastes. And respect Salmon, who puts a lot of effort into this thread weekly for all of us to enjoy.
maddiemom
(5,106 posts)hateful responses my remark (Salmon's long, time enjoyable site being increasingly taken over by "set up,"photos). Obviously none of these duded up animals are in distress. On the other hand, who would be stupid enough to post an obviously distressed "fur baby." My animal roommates are entirely happy and I do what I can with local groups. I'll just rest my case. Only... why don't my political remarks generate such controversy ....?
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)I was not agreeing with you. I was trying to say that different people have different tastes, and to many, animals in clothing or set-up poses, are cute. You don't seem to think they have a right to enjoy those kinds of pictures, just because you don't. There is nothing disrespectful to the animals in those pictures. As long as the animals are not distressed, I don't see a problem with it, and I don't expect anyone to post only pictures I approve of. I'm just not that important.
Even though I normally don't care for "dressed" animals (just not my style of humor), last week there was a picture of a hamster in a teensy tiny sweater and I thought it was adorable (because miniature things are adorable to me). Some animals actually like to wear sweaters in cold weather. I'm thinking of making a coat for my older goat to keep her warmer in the winter.
Even after all the posts revealing dismay at your attitude...you just keep on repeating the same protest. I'm sorry, but I think maybe you like the attention too much. You are not hearing anyone but yourself. You are trying too hard to turn an innocent thread into political drama.
Please don't take this as another "nasty" post...I'm not trying to be nasty to you. I just wish you would take a more realistic look at yourself and understand that not everyone thinks like you...and that's OK.
I'm not going to continue this discussion, because it's not what this thread is about. Take care.

maddiemom
(5,106 posts)magazine and I sometimes get in a few licks through her. My Point: and listen carefully, SCE can do as they like. I have no skin in that game. BUT there are always a lot of good , candid animal shots. For instance, as I replied elsewhere, I never, as a mother, would let my child dress up a complacent family pet (or animal companion) in doll clothes and roll them around in a baby buggy. I only wish that some of the political opinions I've made on this forum ever got as many reactions (pro or con).

(9,465 posts)But someone who thinks leaving a gun where an "aggressive" cat can get at it is A-OK, objects to using posed pictures of pets because it's damaging to the animals' dignity? Please tell me which animal rescue group you belong to so that I can avoid it.
No animals' dignity was harmed making this picture, but several innocent yards of yarn were ruthlessly sacrificed.
maddiemom
(5,106 posts)over the years is that one of the many cats who lived with us might have grown opposable thumbs, found the ammo hidden from the youngsters, loaded up and started firing away because he was an aggressive cat.

(35,658 posts)I have a catnip patch and in the spring, I see scenes like that.
I wonder if the kitty climbing the wall is going back to his house. No way to tell, of course, but it makes me think about how enterprising they can be gaining access to a structure.
For awhile when our house was under renovation, there was a little 6" access point under the deck. It is to provide access to plumbing, but our kitty, the only indoor-outdoor cat we have, figured out how to go in that way, through the crawl space, a very creepy area, and then up through the basement to the house. She just loved it that she had her own "emergency entrance" in case she wanted in and no human was available to open the door.

I often wondered about that.
You've outdone yourself this week, SCE, they are ALL awesome & gorgeous.
But I feel the need to pick a few favorites anyway:
The fluffy gray puppy
The sleeping turtle
The cat in the AT&T envelope
The two sleeping kittens
The Bulldog kissing the baby
"Mouse trap game"...(hilarious)
Mama cat looking at her kitten
Little "rat-like" dog on couch with Pug? (Looks like a Pug, is that other critter even a dog?)
Blank cat looking out from drawer
and my favorite this week,
Ministry of Silly Walks (John Cleese would love that one)
Bless you SCE, and thanks

(31,951 posts)Now we all know the secret,
My friends on FB and DU are the real out doers, if such a term exists. They fill my feed and inbox with great pics, and I use all that I have room for. I wish I could use them all.
I'm sure that somewhere, John Cleese is smiling.
Have a wonderful Sunday evening and week!

One of my first animal friends was Tiger, a grey tabby my cousins had. I've been a lover of them since, but allergies have prevented me from owning thwm. Alas.

I dunno about cats with thumbs, though. That creeps me out. Cats are plotting world domination anyway. Thumbs will just accelerate the inevitable. Brrrr!
Thanks, SCE. As always, the highlight of the day!

(5,106 posts)whatever on head) phonied up. Thanks Salmon, I've been snowed under today with negative responses to what I thought was a passing remark on your pics. They have a lot of fans who have jumped down my throat. I, too, am a fan who appreciates your efforts.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)There is a very good reason so many jumped down your throat. That reason is because what you said - what you took issue with - is NOT an issue. You just happened to have an opinion, clearly not shared by too many others, that is quite frankly, silly.
Now I understand everyone is entitled to their opinion, but some are better kept closer to the chest, so to speak.
While Bob (SalmonChantedEvening - he has stated his real name on a thread in the lounge in the past, so I know he won't mind) and I have never met in person, I consider him a friend in real life. He and I are friends on Facebook and I can tell you with absolutely no reservation in the least, that this man has just about the biggest heart of anyone I have ever come across in my life and I am honored that he has included me in his group of friends on that Social Media website. He consistently displays an overwhelming affection for animals of all types and that, coupled with his wonderful sense of humor, his great wit and his compassion for progressive ideals make for many, MANY laughs that I am graced by on a regular basis.
I have been a regular reader of his weekly threads for just about as long as he has been putting them up and they are without a doubt among the, if not the most popular regular contributions to Democratic Underground. His threads regularly garner well over 5000 views, some exceeding 7000. For anyone that regularly posts on DU, to get 5000 views every time you hit the "Post My Thread!" button is enviable.
To illustrate this, here is the page showing his recent threads, but because of DU's software, this only shows them back to January 5th. All of them exceeded 4300 views with the top being 6703. Scroll down and you'll see the 7 threads still active in the lounge;
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1018&page=26&sort=author
But he deserves it. I don't know if you have ever put up a thread with 20 or more pictures in it and included comments, but I have and I am telling you, it is a painstaking process that is just not done in 5 minutes. It's a lot of work and I for one thank him for his craft as much as his research and sense of humor.
But I digress.
You mentioned in one of your responses to those jumping down your throat that you are in your 70's. So I want to apologize for my tone in my response. I tend to consider most DU'ers as similar in age to me (I'll be 55 in May) so I beg your pardon ma'am for my terse reply.
But I meant it. These are pictures of cats and dogs, for crying out loud! You said, and I quote directly;
and in a subsequent post you said;
Really? Seriously? "Demeaning"? "Dignity"? Come on, madam. Honestly. You're in your 70's for Christs sake! Do you actually think a cat and a dog or a pony for that matter give two farts and a dead bird about their "Dignity"? Much less have any concept of the process of losing it and therefore become demeaned?
I've been around animals all my life, and with the exception of the last 9 1/2 years since I put down my last dog, we have had pets in our family since I was an infant. I've been around horses, cats, dogs and numerous exotics. I never, not once, EVER could recall a time when I thought "That animal has dignity."
Pride? Sure. Lots of animals seem to be prideful. My late Boston Terrier very often exhibited what could be called pride at doing all sorts of things, like finding the perfect stick for me to throw, or tearing a cardboard box to precisely evenly sized little shreds. But dignified? Sorry, but a hearty Laughing My Ass Off is due here.
Here's a video of a lion, an animal most people certainly might think of as prideful, proving the point that he has absolutely no dignity in the least possible measure;
Yes, he just rolled in a pile of Rhino dung.
Cats and dogs and even ponies do that sort of thing all the time.
And yet you felt it was necessary to chastise Bob on his selection of photos.
The idea of dignity is purely a human one. We might give it to animals, but I assure you, and I am willing to bet most animal behaviorists will agree, the concept is totally beyond them, with the possible exception of certain species of whales.
That you find it a "troubling trend" is also one of the reasons I think you took 3 colors of crap for your comments.
No, it isn't. Not in the least is it a "troubling trend". Want to know how I know this? Because I have been a member of this board for 11 and a half years and I can tell you with complete confidence that if Bob's weekly threads included a troubling trend of any kind, many DU'ers would let him have it with both barrels.
Look...it's the internet. People take funny pictures of dogs and cats. Sometimes they dress them up. Why? Because a cat or a dog wearing a hat or a coat or sunglasses or a scarf or shoes is funny, that's why.
Case in point, the late, great Mr Beau Brummel;
This one isn't so much as funny, but damned handsome!
Not one ounce of dignity lost, I assure you.
You know what else would make a funny picture for Bob to use? A pony wearing a tablecloth.
If you don't think pics like that are funny, then you probably shouldn't open any more of his Sunday threads, because I for one, am going to be sending him animals wearing clothes pics every chance I get from now on.
You repeatedly stated that you were merely giving a "simple opinion" and that it was a "simple remark"
Sorry, but it isn't that simple. You are taking to task the author of what has become a DU institution for something that is completely innocuous. The fact that Bob includes the "staged and posed" shots are in large part what makes his thread so enjoyable. The pics ARE FUNNY! And the popularity of his threads are witness to that.
We all have our moments. I certainly have had a few in my decade plus posting here. But sometimes the prudent thing to do is back up, take a breath, have another look at what we wrote and consider whether or not it was really worth it, necessary or appropriate.
And then do the right thing.
Regards,
Paul

(5,106 posts)all my life, mostly dogs, cats and horses. I have also worked professionally with horses. But J.H.C. on a crutch! I just wish any comment I've ever made got half us much reaction as this one comment that I just threw out there. My daughter does websites professionally and I know how much work is involved. The greatest charm of SEE's site has been the usually obvious spontaneous quality. Where we just have to disagree: animals DO have their dignity, and just because many are sweet and loving enough to put up with all kinds of shit from their owners doesn't make it any less so. P. S. re: the lion. That big boy is thoroughly enjoying himself and he looks adorable for it! No one posed him that way and he has just as much right to have fun as does the most harmless kitten. See my point? Probably not.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)It just doesn't hold water.
Sorry.
Again, you are interjecting opinion which not too many others seem to share.
Dignity noun;
1 the state or quality of being worthy of honour or respect: the dignity of labour
OK...I'll give you that. But the question is really can an animal LOSE its dignity? I say no, it cannot. Only in the humans eye.
1.1 [count noun] a high rank or position: he promised dignities to the nobles in return for his rivals murder
Regardless of how many feel about their cats, nope. Sorry.
2a composed or serious manner or style: he bowed with great dignity
Time and time again, with video after video and picture after picture, dogs and cats RARELY display a "composed or serious manner" unless you count being pissed off dinner is late. (Edit - unless they are HIGHLY trained)
2.1a sense of pride in oneself; self-respect: it was beneath his dignity to shout
This is arguable for any animal that willingly and takes glee in rolling in feces. By any normal human standard, that is not dignified. It can be funny, but it ain't dignity. Not by a long shot.
Re: the Lion;
Actually, he is doing it for purely instinctual reasons ie: to smell like his prey. He isn't doing it for fun or to have a bloody good giggle or because he is enjoying himself. He is doing it because nature and evolution have told him that if he does it, it will make it easier for him to get closer to and subsequently kill a Rhino. Plain and simple. See my point?
Probably not.
Edit; BTW, I explained why your post got the responses it did. You are tilting at a windmill. The only problem is that NO ONE else sees it the way you do, thus making your quest one that lacks an audience, much less a justified one.
OK, fine. You are in your late 60's.
maddiemom
(5,106 posts)is pretty normal animal behavior, granted the instinct arose from smelling like their prey. ( this would include small dog instinct in believing they are actually going to bring down a cow or horse, and YES they might do so in packs). My Bad: implying they enjoy it. DAMN! I would like sometime to get into a political discussion with this much intensity in response. As a footnote, some of the least sensitive and caring of animals I have ever known were professional show horse trainers. NO! not most of them, just a few. They would be the first to admit that animals don't have dignity, while having spent their lives around animals. This thought straightened me right out regarding this discussion. Bye, now.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)There is a HUGE difference between between being a cruel asshole toward an animal in ones care and posting a picture of a cat posed with a fake nose and mustache on a message board.
