In the human community, South African writer Laurence Anthony was well known and respected for his several books that made best seller lists, including his book, "The Elephant Whisperer."
But in the elephant community of South Africa, he is best known for saving a herd of elephants from extinction, by providing refuge and habitat for their band.
When he died, in March 2012, solemnly, the herd walked the twelve mile trail to his home, stayed for two days, without eating, and then left to head home.

(32,324 posts)I have done a lot of house sitting, and pets are often semi-despondent when their owner is gone.
And then the day before the home owner is to return, they excitedly start grooming, become interested in play again and are very plased with life.
In one case, the brown Labrador sang to the moon for two hours, when his parents were scheduled to return the next morning.

(72,300 posts)I won't tolerate abuse of any form to animals or humans. I don't turn my back on it when I see it. More than once I've stepped in when necessary or called in a complaint if that was the prudent action.
"scientific" types also come up with things like that.
And the TV programs (even on Animal Planet) have on humans who report that all of the wildlife kingdom is always so cutthroat, big animal eat little animal.
But so much of what I see going on with wildlife has to do with their intense co operation and friendly competition.
When our orange tabby kitten first showed up, he slept outside on the picnic table, only some thirty feet from where Mr Bobcat sat each morning looking for gophers. As Stevie matured, he and Mr Bobcat had a territory marking contest going on. Mr Bobcat left his scat in the two far corners of where the fences went. Stevie would carefully throw dirt on top of each of the piles of the scat, and the next day, the scat would be back.
If Mr Bobcat had wanted to take Stevie out, he certainly could have. But they both seemed to thrive on the friendly competition.

But sad to know that no one there has ever had a dog or cat or pig or horse as a pet.
