(66,318 posts)Sheesh! It's like Idiocracy combined with Soylent Green in there.
I responded to a post once, in my capacity as a Physician Assistant, that smokers shouldn't smoke around their kids, or you know, smoke at all anyway. You should have heard the howls of outrage from the smokers. Everything from "nicotine isn't poison!" to "I've smoked three packs a day for forty years and I'm perfectly fine!" to "You're not really a medical provider if you dared to say something like that, so phthpthphthphth!"
I got called a torturer and an unethical provider when I mentioned an encounter once with a patient trying to shake me down for narcotics.
I have DU friends who are constantly raked over the coals in GD for anything at all or nothing.
It's insane...

(8,217 posts)GD allows for actual conversation while Meta was a place for griping and drama.
The nice thing about Meta however, was that it was private and not shown in the general place if you're not a member.
It limits the kind of crazy that we see nowadays in GD that any body could see, and can be google-able.
I thought of Meta as a necessary evil as a release valve.

They elbow their way to the spot on the slope of the pool that perfectly aligns with their nipples, and if you are in that spot, watch the fuck out.
Sorry.

Part of what should make the lounge more comfortable than GD is that is is NOT GD. It is a generally accepted "policy" that we can rag on GD if it is done in a humorous way but calling out and real complaining of it or especially other groups or individuals is not cool.
So yeah, GD is and the Lounge is more with a touch of but please keep the out

(55,007 posts)honestly your OP is even OK stand alone without knowing the copycat (though more funny is always better!) but a few of the replies were veering towards gd-level bleh.
Kind of touchy out there and it needs to STAY out there. I didn't alert or anything, and I doubt if we could get consensus to lock anyway just wanted to remind EVERYBODY of the Lounge's purpose.

(38,958 posts)I trashed the forum completely. It no longer shows up in my Latest Threads. If I happen upon a GD thread on the home page, I may read it, but will under no circumstances comment upon it and for the most part I participate much less on DU overall. I have found FB to be a better news feed for me.

(29,414 posts)I strive to only comment on those few threads that are more along the lines of a discussion and only casually skim the fights, usually having to back out of them because they're bringing my former good mood down to the basement drain.
Something that DU has taught me over the years is a couple of personal definitions of words.
A discussion is a conversation between two or more people with the intent to learn something between them.
A fight/debate is a verbal/written brawl with the intent to WiN!!11! at all costs.
I don't care if the dictionary agrees or not; that's my interpretation in how both are approached on DU

(2,340 posts)It's best to grow a thick skin, but also to remember that it's merely a message board. I've been on forums that make GD seem extremely polite and mellow. I thought we believe in free speech, and if things get a bit too rough and tumble, there is always the lounge.
Isn't a thread calling out GD kind of, sort of, doing the same things that you're complaining about?
