Maybe they figured, if the troops are going to get fucked anyway they should at least carry protection.

5. I actually liked the MRE's with the flameless heater

I have eaten many a case of those while on isolated surveillance stakeout. The heaters were also nice on cold nights.

I'd love to have a few cases for those "just in case" times.

6. Back in my USAR days....

We would sit around and eat our almost expired Viet Nam jungle rats. The guys that had served on NATO exercises use to tell me about the MRE's the other troops had and how they would trade like school kids at lunch. The Germans got rations of beer and the French and Italians had wine. I always envisioned the French MRE's having a main course and a few sides but 6 sides of different sauces. The Germans love our meat and potatoes and would trade their good stuff for them.

Ours then were overly salty and I would come back from the field with 5-10 lbs. of water weight gain. And they weren't use to women and every ration meal came with 3 blocks of toilet paper...yes, 3 blocks of sandpaper, like that would help. I carried in my own tp and dry prunes (which the guys loved to trade for) when we did maneuvers. I generally stuck to tube steaks and pearls (franks and beans) as they constipated one the least. The date rolls were do dry they could be uses as projectiles in a pinch, and some of the other stuff was just plain nasty.
