(149,583 posts)Cannon Beach, OR holds a special place in my heart.
Long, long ago, after my dad went to work for GE, and he had benefits, our very first vacation was in a rented house on that beach, for a week.
It was heaven.
We had never had a vacation before, and we reveled in it. My brother and I played on the beach every day and got sandy and probably sunburned too...It was my dad's first paid vacation.
Thank you for triggering that great memory!
It's a very nice picture too.....and you are a handsome man!

(3,998 posts)I want to go there. Wonder if there's a town nearby and places to stay. Must do some research now!

(50,566 posts)Lots of hotels/inns, etc. The town has strict zoning ordinances so all of the buildings sort of fit into the look of the place. In warmer months there are flower baskets everywhere. It's also close to Ecola State Park, which is absolutely gorgeous and includes forest trails. And then it's a short drive on Hwy. 101 to the town of Seaside, which is not highbrow but has more sort of beachside boardwalky attractions if you're in the mood for a little "cheese."

(11,761 posts)I'm in Illinois now, and I love Illinois too, but Oregon was where I was born and raised, it's my home.
If you've never been, you have to make time and take a trip to the southern Oregon coast too and dip down into northern Cal-- the southern coast is rocky and tide pools and then the redwood forest in northern California. We used to do summer camping trips in Jedidiah Smith SP and seriously, there's nothing like it.

(4,851 posts)I was born in NYC, but when life took me to the pacific northwest, and Oregon in particular, I knew I found home. Due to family circumstances, we moved back to NY, but its only a matter or time before I go home.
The greatness of Oregon is that I had days where I went skiing in the morning up on Hood and that same afternoon had a bon-fire on the beach at Ecola (back when no one would stop you for such a thing) complete with a night swim. Those things are what make Oregon so great.
Glad you enjoyed your trip. I agree with the post below that Ecola is the place to truly enjoy the Oregon coast, but Haystack and its rising beauty is somethign everyone should see.
