After watching all three tv seasons and just recently finished the latest book I've become enamored of both the tv series and the books. Though nothing has been said from the first few episodes during the first season about the identity of Jon Snow's mother I'd mostly forgotten about that. Nothing more has been said in the books to date either, but the author mentioned in a discussion I watched with him in it on YouTube that it will be revealed eventually and be supposedly a shocking surprise. But for some reason just a few days ago I got an inkling of who it might be, and I think I'm right about this...

Cersei Lannister. Anyone else think so or think it's someone else?

1. I'm almost certain that Jon Snow's mother is

Lyanna Stark, and his father is Rhaegar Targaryen.

If you read the first book again, go through the Ned Stark chapters by themselves, and almost every one has a flashback to "Promise me, Ned" from Lyanna. Ned said the baby was his so Robert - in his hatred of all things Targaryen - would not kill his dying sister's son. He put his promise to his sister and the baby's life over the shame & humiliation it caused Catelyn, not to mention the stain on his own honor.

The Tower of Joy flashback right before he was executed gives you a lot of clues, as does Dany going into the House of the Undying in book 2. Ned and 6 companions went to rescue Lyanna from 3 of the Kingsguard at the Tower of Joy, and only Ned, Howland Reed (Meera and Jojen's father) and the baby left. Lyanna died there, as did the three Kingsguard knights and Ned's other 4 companions.

Right now, the only living person who knows what happened in the Tower of Joy is Howland Reed.

3. Now here's my biggest problem...

I never did get a chance to read the first book. I borrowed all of them except the first one from one of my neighbors. She didn't have the first one anymore because she loaned it to someone that never gave it back. So, what I know of what happens in the first book I could only get from the tv series, and Lyanna is barely mentioned in that.

Now I'm going to have to get myself back to the second hand bookshop and see if they have a cheap copy of the first book again. I looked for one when I was in there trying to find out if the sixth book had been published yet but they no longer had a second hand copy of the first book. Apparently, the second hand ones in the series sell like mad almost the moment they come in.

What is it about Dany going into the House of the Undying that I missed that referred to something about Jon Snow's mother? I can't look through that one again because I gave it back to my neighbor already.

Dammit, if I had the extra money I'd just buy them all new since I know I'd read them over and over again.

I'd completely forgotten about Jon Snow's mother until I suddenly got this inkling a few days ago, and now it's driving me mad!

4. Don't feel bad

I read the original book in 1997, then bought the other books new when they came out, so I read book 2 in 1998 and book 3 in 2000... I then had an 11 year gap before starting the series over again when A Dance with Dragons was confirmed to be coming out in 2011.

So, I never put 2+2 together on Jon Snow's parentage until I went through the series a 3rd time, and had some clues from the internet.

(And, the Red Wedding was still a tough read the second time through - probably because I had not read it in 11 years!)

In the House of the Undying, there was mention of a third child, which people took to mean Jon (after Viserys and Dany), and also mention of a blue winter rose in ice, and blue winter roses were Lyanna's symbol.

I hope that GRRM and the producers of the show continue to play that storyline out and not cop out with some sort of stupid "twist" because a lot of people have heard of this or figured it out. The clues have been in the books for a long time.

11. well, there has not been as much mention

of Lyanna and Rhaegar on the show as there was in the books, so it will be tougher to reveal on the show. They had the first few episodes with Robert & Ned visiting her in the tombs and Robert talking about her or Rhaegar a few times and that was about it.

The producers may be trying to keep it as more of a 'surprise'.

some people think Tyrion is not the son of Tywin Lannister, but is also a Targaryen bastard, the product of Aerys the Mad King raping Joanna Lannister. Much less support for that than Jon Snow, though

Not sure what I think of it. I do think Tyrion is going to stay awhile. I am not sure if that is because I adore the character or not. I remember reading something in probably the last book that made me put Tyrion and Dragons together. I do need to go back and read them. I have not done that yet.

I agree with you about Jon Snow. I think it was you that lead me to think about those ties on a FB post. It works.
