Cherry Fairs

Cherry fairs were held in cherry orchards and were scenes of considerable license. In "How the Wise Man Taught His Son", from the 15th century, the transitory nature of life is likened to one of these occasions of temporary gaiety: "And so, sone, thys worldys wele hyt fayrth but as a cherry fayre." A saying meandered through the centuries to reach us as "Life is but a bowl of cherries", which seems considerably less merry than a cherry fair, but I guess it has something to do with depreciation.
