I had never been into anime and never read a manga, but I caught this series streaming on Netflix and was blown away. I can't believe how addicted I am to it.
The last remnants of humanity fight to survive behind a network of enormous walls built to fend off the Titans--mysterious, nearly invulnerable giants who like to eat humans for fun. After more than a century keeping the Titans at bay, the walls have been breached and all hell is breaking loose.
The story is amazingly richly imagined, and you find yourself really getting caught up in the plight of the main characters. And the Titans are truly terrifying--sort of a bizarre mixture of a zombie, King Kong, and an evil clown. Basically a little of everything that frightened you as a kid.
I liked the show so much that when I finished the last episode, I bought the manga books so I could see how the story continues. The anime follows the manga almost frame-for-frame.
So check it out, if it sounds interesting to you. But one caveat: it is violent as hell. This is not a show, or manga, for kids.

(6,107 posts)It suffers from a lot of problems that anime usually has (characters yelling at each other constantly, episodes where not much happens to advance the plot but people talk about their existential crises, et cetera) but it's pretty good, overall. The Titans, like you said, are scary.
So is there another season coming up?
Frank Cannon
(7,570 posts)So probably not until sometime in 2015.
They are producing a live-action movie, though, which will probably look quite a bit like this recent "Titan"-inspired Subaru ad. Don't know when the release date will be.

(6,107 posts)Now they just need to get that '3d Maneuvering Gear' right, and this could be a good flick.

(8,217 posts)Problem was, it is released sporadically and the way it has different companies doing the translation, it got a bit confusing since it moves around a bit.
I like it, but I haven't seen the anime.

(7,570 posts)They seem to be pretty well translated and consistent.
They're up to Volume 11 now, and they come out about every three or four months. Next one's due in April. Hajime Isayama says he plans to end the story within 20 volumes.

(8,217 posts)Hopefully they will get better in translating Light Novels.
There are a bunch I want to read fully.
Can't wait for SAO(Sword Art Online) to be fully translated. That thing has been around since early 2000s, and only now getting some sort of traction.

(7,570 posts)I'm an old fart who's pretty much unfazed by today's horror movies. And I have to admit that there have been moments in the anime and the manga that totally freaked me out.

(2,201 posts)Is it translated or is it subtitled?
I was never a fan of anime until somebody nagged me into watching 'Death Note'. Great stuff.
Frank Cannon
(7,570 posts)And the episodes streaming on Netflix are subtitled.
I've never seen 'Death Note', but I keep hearing good things about it. I'm just gonna have to watch it now!
