Cockfighting in England
In England, cockfighting was a school boys' sport commonly practiced on Shrove Tuesday. Each boy brought a fighting cock to the schoolmaster and they indulged all morning watching their cocks fight in the school room. Those who didn't bring in a cock owed the school a cock-penny instead.
A cockfighting pit was erected by Henry VIII for the more magnificent celebration of the sport.
