but it is often the case that carnival-type games were played at some wakes in medieval England. Maybe for more public, famous figures, where a lot of people would want to be in attendance, but not necessarily really choked up about the passing?

Like this one European town would throw cats off third-story balconies in "celebration."

Nowadays they throw stuffed toy cats off the balconies.
