http://www.orlandosentinel.com/features/blogs/gone-viral/os-florida-man-too-obese-prison-20140313,0,3631871.postA Florida man convicted of running a multimillion-dollar real estate scam is telling the court that he's too obese to go to prison -- a claim the judge isn't buying, according to WESH 2 News.
James Olivos told the court Tuesday that he doesn't believe he'd get proper treatment for his morbid obesity if he were to go to prison. He also said he suffers from rectal bleeding, ADHD, sore feet and that he coughs up blood.
The judge gave Olivos 48 hours to produce relevant medical documents.
Olivos isn't the only Florida man to use obesity as a get-out-of-jail-free card. In 2010, 600-pound George Jolicoeur was offered a plea deal because complications from his obesity would have made it too expensive for the state to care for him in prison, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

(66,092 posts)2. If I were the judge, I'd sentence him properly, and then order
a mandated weight-loss program. Any civil rights complaint lodged in protest would be met with a rejoinder that his medical care costs will be significantly lower if he drops the weight.

(37,457 posts)4. He would probably hate the food in prison and lose a ton of weight that way
Harsh but true I think. The food in prison really sucks, even on holidays.

(66,092 posts)5. That's what I've heard.
OTOH, it's very fatty and starchy, so if he does eat it, he won't lose the weight.
I also think he'd be motivated to get in shape, lose the weight and get some muscles because male prisons are a very brutal and predatory environment.

Still, looking at his reasons, I don't think they are good enough.
He will get checked on his issues, he'll lose weight. It feels like a Limbaugh excuse though, which makes me uncomfortable.
