In honor of the day, I'm going to have strawberry and sour cream buckwheat blintzes for brunch, along with maybe some onion and mushroom ones. Buckwheat gives them such a nice golden color.
Blins or blini were symbolically considered by early Slavic peoples in pre-Christian times as a symbol of the sun, due to their round form.[1] They were traditionally prepared at the end of winter to honor the rebirth of the new sun (Butter Week, or Maslenitsa, also called "pancake week" .

(53,339 posts)I can't even SAY "strawberry and sour cream buckwheat blintzes" this early without my tongue getting tripped up.

(14,881 posts)I remembered I had some steamed asparagus frozen in some packets. Found one and added it to the mushroom and onion blintzes.
HAH! They came out perfect. My arteries will probably need roto-rooter after I'm done, though. I forgot myself and went a little heavy on the sour cream...

(53,339 posts)But your blintzes sound delicious!

(14,881 posts)think I'll catch my breath first tho..burp...
I overstuffed them so I could only roll, not fold them. That's ok. I think they're better that way. Phew...
SoCal...now I'm a tad jealous. You have sun. Here in Maine, it's warming up and rained all morning. I took half a dozen steps out my door, hit a patch of black ice and did an ice dance to greet the day. Bah!

(53,339 posts)...because you guys really don't need to hear about our record hot temps. But we sure could use some of that rain!

(14,881 posts)Today will reach the low 40s, positively balmy and nice to strip down to just 2 layers. It's just a tease, though. We'll be back to single digits and I'll be dressed like Nanook of the North, within a few days...
Other than starting to get a touch cabin fever, I'm not minding the winter this year. There's a lot to be said for just giving up and going with it. This is my last day of a 5 day mini-vacation. I've spent the bulk of it snoozing and on the laptop, both under the toasty warmth of an eletric throw...I just refuse to feel guilty for 'wasting my life 'every again. There's a lot to be said for simple creature comforts. And a lot to be said for finding and accepting your fach...it was good to take buzzfeed's animal quiz and learn that my totem is the sloth! A perfect fit, if ever there was one

We'll only hit the mid-70s today, though I'm in the high desert and down below L.A. will be warmer.
But you really gotta stop it with all the photobombing.

(14,881 posts)70s. I dream of temps in the 70s. Heck, I'll take 60s. That's swimming weather for my dogs, who are wasting their lives away napping...

(14,881 posts)I'm just displacing my New England-protestant-work-ethic guilt onto my dogs. They don't seem to mind (or notice) the burden.
And it's not that I'm a native New Englander (nope, hail from PA) or protestant (raised Greek Orthodox...) or have a work ethic (...by a very lazy mother). I'm just surrounded by it up here.
