Its behind is very interesting. There's a wide plate-like bone there that the Wombat uses to protect its family. The babies go deep into the burrow and the mama plugs herself into the opening head first…and her butt is an excellent bony defense against intruders.
I learned that in Australia from a wombat keeper. He might have been putting the American tourists on…but I don't think so!
