How do I create a table on DU?

It appears to edit out consecutive spaces, so that what looks like a neatly laid out table when I type it gets turned into a jumble.


Column 1 *All these stars are in a neat vertical line as I type

More C1 of a different length *All these stars are in a neat vertical line as I type

1. Can't use TABLE formatting so have to do it the hard way
