Alley broke a bone on her left leg again today.

For those of you counting at home, that is the third break plus a bonus ligament tear in the last 3 1/2 years to round out the score. All her injuries are on her left leg.

Alley went with a buddy and I to Malibu for a surf session. She was just relaxing on the beach while we flounder around on a flat, but beautiful day. We brought sandwiches, chips, sodas, and beach chairs. Alley would occasionally watch, and try to coach us from shore with hand signals, but mostly she read under a sun hat. We got out of the waters around 11:30 and had lunch on the beach. While my buddy and I carried our boards to the car Alley brought one of the bags and the rolling cooler. She went back to pick up the last bag while we took off our wetsuits. A guy came running up to us in the parking lot and addressed me by my name, and I knew it was bad.

She later told me when she reached the beach from the parking she could see seagulls, crows, and pigeons attacking our last bag. As she gathered up our stuff and noticed my frito bag just below a little 1.5ft scarp. She did not want the bag to reach the water. Hurrying, she step down with her "good" leg and the little sand scarpe collasped and she came down at a weird angle. She said she heard cracking and poping sounds. The surfer who called me in the parking lot asked her if she was ok, and she let him know she needed help. The guy got me then alerted the lifeguard who bought his 4WD up to Alley and delivered her to the parking lot where we transferred her in our car.

She was pretty bummed, being the trooper she is, she tried not to cry. What bummed her most was that she was convinced that she popped out the screws and plate from her last break (tibia fibia plateau). We drove homeward and I dropped my buddy and our gear off, then continued to our usual E.R. She got fast tracked, and within a couple of hours from breaking her leg in Malibu, we were in our local E.R. in Torrance, with the xray results. She broke her patella, right down the middle (side to side). To tell you the truth, we were both relieved, that she had not ripped out her previous breaks hardware.

After several hours, our ortho guy called the E.R. Doc treating Alley, and told them not to send her home, and that he will come in tomorrow to operate. Here we go again.

After the first break (remember the pics I posted of her Helicopter evac?) she did have a bone density problem. Her endocrinologist found a vitamine D deficiency. She got on a D replacement regimen, and after about 6 months and before the next break her vitamine D levels were back to normal, and her bone density was up.

I have never head of some one breaking a patella without some kind of tramatic impact. I thnk we need to investigate what could be causing these breaks very thoroughly. With any luck, it will just be bad luck.

When are you undergoing your surgery?
