The United States claims Agattu Island as its own territory within the state of Alaska. The claim was disputed in 2009 by the Consulate of Jovak Helm, a micronation with two consuls-for-life as its leaders. The United States has yet to respond to the disputation. Under the Montevideo Convention, a state may exist in spite of its lack of recognition by global powers.[10]
