Mexican Coca Cola...yay or nay?

Glass bottle, made with refined cane sugar as opposed to the high-fructose corn syrup found in U.S. Coke.

I first learned about this at one of my clients' restaurants. The owner kept telling me that he sold Mexican Coke and I thought "Gee, that's great." Finally I asked him about it and it made total sense.

BevMo is selling it for around $1/50 a bottle. Have you tried it? Do you like it? Do you prefer it to U.S. Coke?

Side by side with a corn syrup coke that is. The difference is astounding.

I can get it year-round. It's harder to get the HFCS crap for whiners in my family when they come visit because the local grocery doesn't carry things that don't sell...and HFCS soda in plastic bottles doesn't sell in my neighborhood for some reason.

Many of the ingredients are essential oils which must be emulsified before you can use them (which is a pretty good trick all to itself). There is somewhere online that sells premixed flavoring. I looked into both making it myself from scratch or buying the flavoring, but both options were going to cost me more or about the same as buying it at the store.

But when I do, I prefer Mexican Coke. The local Blockbuster sells it for $1.49 a bottle. I always have some on hand in the summer to drink after mowing the lawn. Compared to the HFCS variety, it's a completely different tasting and superior beverage.

I've tried both Coca Cola and Pepsi made in Mexico with cane sugar, bottled in glass, and I honestly didn't see much of a difference between those and the standard HFCS American plastic bottle versions. I also really don't notice anything that special about the "Throwback" versions of Pepsi products, either. Maybe it's just my palate.

I also tried a bottle of Jarritos brand Mexican cola about a month ago -- I like several of the Jarritos flavors, but this one I did not care for at all -- it was too "floral" with a ton of vanilla, and tasted a lot like the Cherry Vanilla Coke that was out a few years ago, which I also didn't care for. It definitely had some cherry type fruity overtones.

The Jarritos flavors that are sold here at Meijer stores that I do like are the Tamarind, the Guava, the Pineapple, and the Mandarin Orange.

Funny thing #1: Coke with "real" sugar isn't actually that much different from Coke with HFCS. Certainly it's no less "syrupy."

Funny thing #2: The more often you point out the above fact, the louder the apologists will howl.

I can tell the difference by smell alone. The HFCS stuff is groady. The parties responsible for it should be castrated and fed to the squirrels.

No Macs for me. I've got custom Linux builds. I wear old plastic eyeglass frames. I listen to bands so avant-garde that you won't hear of them for another 5 years. I also made my own bicycle and date models. I am überhipster.

The OP didn't call corn syrup poison crap and I wouldn't refer to it as that either. IMO cane sugar simply tastes better. Too much of either is a bad thing. If you can't tell the difference, then good for you. I wish I couldn't tell the difference. It would save me some money.

And I can tell the difference, just like I can tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi and Brand-X cola. The difference simply isn't sufficient to justify paying more for cane sugar.

Incidentally, I'm also not convinced by people who claim to remember with great clarity the way Coke tasted 30 years ago. Not that you're claiming this, but it usually comes up in these discussions as well.

1). "Drink it & tell everybody that it's so much better than that HFCS poison crap that everybody drinks"

No idea who this is addressed to, but since you're responding to my original post, I'm assuming you're addressing it to me. Read my original motherfucking post. I saw this stuff in a store and my client sells it and I was curious. I asked DU what they thought. Your basic self-loathing and disdain for your fellow DUers led you to turn this into a "superiority" contest. No one here is interested in being "superior." We're talking about which fucking soft drink tastes better. Sorry the deep intellectualism of the conversation was more than you could handle.

2). "And then, while you're riding high on your new-found cloud of smug righteousness, buy a Mac and tell everybody about that, too. "

I'm riding "riding high on your new-found cloud of smug righteousness?" No, I have a message for you, and the horse you rode in on. How the fuck do you think you're going to get away with calling me "smug" and "self-righteous" when you don't even fucking know me? And what's with the projection? Seems like you might want to work on those areas in your own life.

3). "Funny thing #2: The more often you point out the above fact, the louder the apologists will howl."

Well, you have me there, that's funny. Really, really funny. Just like you, Orrex. I had you on ignore on DU 2 and after this post I see you belong there on DU3 as well. Goodnight.

Every once in a while I do enjoy a Coke...sometimes diet, sometimes regular. I have qualms about the chemicals in the diet version (not that the regular is chemical-free), and regular Coke seems to leave an aftertaste. But the "burn" from the carbonation and the flavoior itself is something that I find really thirst-quenching. More often than not I'll get a Pellegrino / Crystal Geyser / Calistoga water, because the carbonation does the same thing without the aftertaste.

When I was a kid, growing up in Massachusetts, I used to go to the "Paper Store"...a lunch counter / newsstand in my tiny town...and get Coke in the bottle. That's how it was sold, that's what was available. From what I've read here, it sounds like Mexican Coke is a throw-back to those days, and that raises my curiosity even higher. I wouldn't drink it all the time, just as I don't drink U.S. Coke all the time. But I may have to try it, just to see if it takes me back to the days of my misspent youth.
