Gotten glasses from them and had no complaints. It's a luxury to have more than ONE pair at a time!!!
Especially when either they are on your face, because you're vertical or if you are in bed, they are on the nightstand within arm's reach.
Yep, I'm that nearsighted. Can find the bathroom without glasses, though.

(6,199 posts)Passport arrived two days ago. It took less than two weeks.
The stud has not arrived, although even if it had, it would have arrived at my home address where I am not. I had already bought one in the 2mm size, and wound up giving it to my niece; the stone was too small to be clearly seen and alexandrites are meant to be seen.
You inspired me to go looking for a cloisonne phone case- I found some with "cloisonne" prints, but they were for iPhone and just didn't have the same charm as the old Bic lighter cases. It was a nice thought, though, and one I hadn't thought of.

One thing I was thinking about with the cloisonne case was how when you watch movies from the 30s and 40s that you'll see the wealthier folks using these nice cigarette cases (usually just engraved, not enameled.) Pillows and wedges don't work for me, so I tried this inflatable rubber thing for under my mattress. It worked great for a year. Now, the pump has died and the switch won't work at all, so I can't fill it up. I was looking at getting a replacement motor, but it's just as much money as the whole thing new. And for $50 extra, I got a sturdy metal bed frame that the head raises manually in 3 different positions, which is great, no more deflating in the middle of the night (a big minus with the inflatable thing). I really can't afford it right now, but I also can't afford to be sick for another 6 months either (That's how long it took me to get over my last bout with bronchitis).

(54,341 posts)It had been ten years since I ordered the last one, and I wasn't ready for the new ones to be much bigger than the old ones. I liked the size of my old car just fine--that's why I ordered a new one that I thought would be just like it. Also, I didn't pay a lot of attention to details, and where my old one had a CD player that held six CDs, this one only can take one, so I can't switch back and forth except by ejecting and replacing. Like so many new cars (I guess), this one has almost everything controlled by electronics, even the emergency brake, which I HATE. I don't like having my life, or that of other people when I'm not in the car, dependent on some button.
On the other hand, it gets decent gas mileage (for the make--a German car is still a German car) and drives/handles like an absolute DREAM. The dealer thought I was a mental basket case when I requested a stick shift. Even here in Germany now, most people go for automatic. But it purrs among like a contented cat, and at any speed. Not having learned to drive here, I am not comfortable at speeds of 120 MPH (200 KPH) although the car could handle that speed and more without straining. I rarely take it over 120 KPH, and even then only on short Autobahn stretches when I'm late for something and there's no traffic. In general, aggressive German drivers scare me more than the Warsaw Pact ever did, and I only use the car as a last resort. My last one had maybe 65,000 Kilometers on it after ten years. I picked this one up last August, and don't yet have 1000 KM on it. I bought this brand mostly as a defensive measure. I had to talk my wife into it the first time when I got her hers. After a semi missed seeing her next to him, and demolished her car with her still in it, she saw the merits of having a stable car. She crawled out of the wreck alive, something she would not have done in a less sturdy car. That is the reason I went with the same brand. I didn't get it to show off or go for Sunday drives. I got it for self-preservation. On the Autobahn, with half the cars on the road zooming along at 120 MPH, there is rarely such a thing as a minor accident.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)I'm so used to a handbrake, that I doubt I'd be able to adjust to any other kind easily. And then you've got to train yourself in using a button in an unfamiliar place.
I've often wondered if I could drive well on European motorways without getting myself in a wreck. Not because I'd drive aggressively, but just from total unfamiliarity of their driving habits. I'm used to idiot drivers in the U.S. and can most times predict their stupid maneuvers. It might take me a while to get to that point on another country's roads.
Good to hear your wife was all right, and that you still think of safety foremost. Back when I bought my at present 10-year-old car, my criteria was high-mpg and low emissions, which made most of my co-workers look at me funny. The salesman was not judgmental at all, and my past-wife and I were refreshed to see that kind of attitude from someone (here in Houston.) We probably didn't save any money, but we needed a new car right away. My '88 Jetta had finally died, and I was glad to get rid of it. I probably spent as much money repairing it as I had in buying it (used.)
DFW
(54,341 posts)That meant a well-made car and one that would not need a lot of time in the shop. The trouble is, I drive so little, if the thing has a big problem, I won't notice it for a long time. But I didn't buy one of their hotshot brands counting on having it in the shop all the time.
It does happen though. With my wife's new car, after her old one got turned to scrap by the semi, it had all sorts of minor problems. It was clunking and the yellow "motor problem" light kept coming on. We took it back to the place where we got it, where they also have a huge shop and parts depot. But they are very snooty there (you DARE to make a complaint about OUR brand of car?), and my wife doesn't dress the part of someone who one should not push around. So they kept telling her the car was fine when it wasn't. We have a small place where the shop owner is a Greek who REALLY knows cars, and he told us the thing hadn't even been touched by the dealership. She wrote them a scathing letter, saying she expected them to repair what was wrong, never mind that the guarantee had expired, or the report would show up in consumer's union, the city government (helps that she knows the president of the Düsseldorf city council), the German Better Business Bureau, and the manufacturer's head office in Munich.
This time, the bill came to 1400 euros (about $2000), with a note attached that the bill had been considered as "paid." Her car ran perfectly, and has ever since.

(54,341 posts)With Customs and Immigration, along with time to change planes, that makes it about a 20 hour trip for us to get to Hawaii..
Not a spur of the moment thing.
On the other hand, places we CAN go to on the spur of the moment (and be there in less than 2 hours) include Prague, Budapest, Barcelona, Paris, London, Vienna, Florence, Copenhagen, Munich, Berlin, Stockholm, Amsterdam, and, if you can afford them, Switzerland and Norway. Plus, we can drive to the banks of the Rhein in about 13 minutes. Yin and Yang.
I visited Europe in my 20s. Now it sounds like just too long of a flight. I would want to fly in first- or business-class, but that is way too expensive!

I once did a roundtrip on AB to LAX from D'Dorf for under 2000 euros for business class (they don't have first), and it was like a lounge for ourselves. The best was on Air Chance (Air France) one time, when my wife and I were on our way to a graduation in L.A. For reasons unknown (other than that I fly AF VERY frequently), they upgraded me and my wife to first class for the trip over. I don't know if King Louis XVI ever flew on Air France (I suspect not), but if he had, he would not have received better treatment.

(14,881 posts)I've wanted to plant blueberry bushes for 10 years. When the big backyard maple came down last year, I realized I *finally* have a place to put them!
Just this morning, I spent an hour+ cutting down brambles and clearing the area up. I'm about to head out to start a lasagna garden on top the remains of what was once, long before I came here, a terraced garden by that maple. I plan to lay down a good, thick layer of cardboard and newspapers collected this winter, covered by a thick layer of Dahli's manure today. Next chance I get, I'll add a thick layer of more newspaper and maybe some 1st cut hay, covered my more manure. Luckily, Dahli produces an endless supply, faster than I can read the paper!
kentauros

(14,881 posts)endless supply.
I could have the soil tested around the corner at the soshalist aggie extension office, but I'll probably just pick up an organic mix with a balance of everything.
Straw would probably be better than hay, but I've got lots of extra hay; it's 1st cut so shouldn't be loaded with seed. I'll just pick a couple of the coarser, less appetizing bales.
Now that I've got hi-speed internet and a cell phone w/camera in it, this is the year I have to start taking some pix and getting them posted!

(29,414 posts)to start a good hot compost heap
Also, once your plants are a few inches tall, put down a layer of hay or straw to cover the soil. That keeps the weeds from getting any sunlight while preventing the moisture from evaporating as much.
As for soil amendments, I mentioned weeds because they are natural indicators of what's missing from your soil. No need to have the soil tested if pay attention to which weeds come up no matter what you do.
Have a look at this (old) article on weeds for farmers:
http://journeytoforever.org/farm_library/weeds/WeedsToC.html
(There are some good free book downloads there, too.)
magical thyme
(14,881 posts)or just ahead of it. Just open a tiny area for the seeds or seedling to poke through. For direct seeding, I just put down a thin layer initially so they can poke right up through. That helps keep the soil surface from drying out and protects them from wind while they're germinating and tiny seedlings. I'm high on a ridge and we can get some pretty strong winds here.
I'm going to try "double-digging" at least part of the garden this year. We'll see how far I get. But it can double your yield (or more) by making it easier for the roots to extend downward, and it lets the plants access minerals in the subsoil. Because of the work involved, this may be something I do in stages -- a section this year, another section next year, and so on. Time will tell. Maybe it will go faster than I'm anticipating, but I figure for planning purposes it's best to be pessimistic when estimating my endurance

(12,646 posts)Bought for ourselves (rather than just myself) a thouroughly inspected structurally sound "as is" 1970 model (with the original carpet and appliances, but relatively new electrical and pluming throughout) with my husband for $25K, lot rental for the 60ft x 80ft lot the trailer is on (it has a small back yard, existing fruit trees, enough of "a view" to feel like we're almost in the country, and the property line is 15 ft. either side from the trailer)is $750 a month at a very nice privately owned park with a 10-year lease.
We're spending an additional $30K (bath and kitchen update, energy-efficient weather-proofing, trades work for the critical stuff and needed maintenece, new floors and paint) to bring it up to our needs and as near as to ADA standards as we can get it.
I expect it would easily last another 30 years as long as we keep it up. And we get a tax write-off to upgrade it.
Considering we're paying $1600 a month for the privilidge of living in a 1950's 900 sq ft 2 bdrm 1 ba bungelow in the middle of the 'hood and in far worse shape than the double-wide, this is a bargain and a half. And we can do whatever we want in the interior without permission, so long as it won't burn down the park or disturb the neighbors...
Some people might think a double-wide is low, but even though we don't have granite countertops and travertine backsplashes and we have to be mindful of the structural load we put on the floor (so no concert grand pianos or partical accellorators!), it's a nice, clean spacious home with an open floorplan and good insulation. And nice, new bamboo floors (that nasty 70's shag carpet and 3/4" particle board subfloor was the first thing to be gone, baby, gone)

(5,351 posts)He joined the Navy at 18 and met my mom in 1965 in Millington, TN. They met in June, got engaged in August, and were married in November that same year--they celebrate their 49th anniversary this year. They retired to Montana just shy of 7 years ago so he could be closer to his family and because he likes the weather better out there and so does my mom. He also still loves to hunt and fish and they have some of the best places in the country for that, and even if you don't hunt or fish it's really beautiful country.
I grew up all over the world (like a lot of military brats) and am currently living in Tennessee. I'm trying to get a job out there this year so I can move closer to them--they're not getting any younger and neither am I. (Dammit!) I'm also over living in a big city and want to be back out West. We lived in Idaho for 9 years and I really enjoyed it but couldn't find a job I liked to save my life.
I was sick a lot last year and had to use a lot of days off because of that, so I only got to visit them for a week instead of my usual one week in June, another in October. My mom came down to visit for two weeks in November but I haven't seen my dad since last June. I can't wait!

(4,465 posts)It sounds like you're close to them, that's so nice. I'm excited for you that you get to go see them.
Yeah, Montana seems like real Outback Cowboy & Indian Country to me, The Real Frontier. I'd love to see it- I hope you get to move back soon!

No, can't say any of us are ever pleased with how much we have to spend on our cars at times. But, the alternative is worse

(21,675 posts)I bought the services of a flooring company to put in new baseboards thru my whole house on Friday. Woohoo! After I put in Pergo flooring over 10 years ago, I never finished it with baseboards. Just got sick of looking at it, so after getting my tax refund, decided it was time.

Raffi Ella
(4,465 posts)I didn't pay that much more for mine, just under $30 shipped. I wanted them last year but couldn't find a deal and knew if I waited I would eventually find them cheaper. I finally saw some on Ebay! you can imagine how excited I was-
I have a $10 pair that I've had for forever and I love them but it's nice to have a new and different pair for a change.

frogmarch
(12,153 posts)the brush is wide enough to swipe a nail in one stroke. The polish doesn't chip very easily, either. And the bottle is beautiful!

(18,490 posts)I saw it on Amazon's front page this morning, went back later and the front page was all about their new tv streamer thingy. So I went searching and yes, the offer is still in effect, so I got it. I have lots of free books already in my kindle for PC and cloud reader; this thing I can read on my recumbent exercise bike, like I used to with real paperbacks.

(14,274 posts)I decided it was finally time to part ways with my 11 year old car and upgrade to something new. Too bad I have been so busy at work this week that I have had no time to drive it yet or figure out all but the most basic controls.

(3,108 posts)I am so tickled-- this is our first hybrid! We've got it up to 41.6 mph and still climbing, after having it for just a week. Mindful driving is definitely key. What kind of mileage are you getting?
Generic Brad
(14,274 posts)I know there are diagnostic tools that will tell me, but I have not had the free time to look into it. But it is a fun to see the mph hanging in there between 50-99.9 when I am coasting down a long grade.

(19,288 posts)And a beautiful silver ice bucket from Bethine Churches estate. They are etched with Frank Churches name and the organization's who gave him these awards. I am very proud that Frank Church was a senator from this Podunk state.
A few of my close friends worked Bethine's private parties and fundraisers. Yep, I'm friends with the help, not the players. We got an early access. I put my Bush evil asses of power cards in it the card holder.

(19,288 posts)He was on the 'Church Committee' and he had a great liberal mind. My friends knew his wife Bethine and did her private parties. My folks received post cards and Christmas cards regularly.
I wanted to take a picture but I don't know if the engraving would show up very well.

(4,465 posts)I love silver things. I look for them in second hand stores because I like the idea of them having a history, like your piece does. My favorite one is my Gran's pewter jewelry box. It's small and footed and has a beautiful patina to it and this tiny little key to lock it with. Her initials are etched on the top, I love it.
libodem
(19,288 posts)That jewelry box sounds beautiful and sweet because it has a personal family history. I collect older dolls, also. One friend of mine had a nice doll her mom made. I thought she would appreciate mine. She didn't see the charm. She made it clear she only had her doll because of the family tie not because she really cared for dolls.
Oh well, to each their own. I have a doll from my mom too but she has a ton of doll friends.
Thank you for for nice comments regarding my silver pieces.

First one in 7 years, but really reward for 3 years of surgery and rehab finally complete!

(4,465 posts)That's a great looking board. I hope the rehab wasn't related to the sport. In any case, that is awesome that you're better and able to go out there again. Have Fun!

There's still much to figure out about both, and having poor vision doesn't help.
I was away during Jan & Feb, so just really started using computer in March, and printer installed late in March.
I like to scan old family photos using the printer, and post some of them on Facebook for the younger generations, brought up away from the family home city.
