When buying one for the kids, I had to go to some off-the-wall catalog to get 'vintage' toys because I wanted to get the metal one and not the crappy plastic variety (which doesn't work as well or feel as nice to play with). Of course, growing up I had my slinky taken away from me. Mom's will do that when their daughters (me and my 2 friends) attach it to a ceiling light/fan fixture and wait for it to be turned on by some unsuspecting brother. It sizzled and spun around. We're probably lucky we didn't electrocute ourselves trying to rig it up.

Metal ones are the best - they flow better. I usually ended up tangling mine and trying to untangle it would only deform it, so then I'd get a new one.
