That's how many miles I walked today. I've been trying to lose weight since the beginning of the year and I've mainly been doing it with reduced calories and a lot more exercise than I used to get. I've walked over three miles before, but this is the first time that I've walked more than three and a quarter. Here's hoping that I can eventually get to four.

(20,453 posts)I'm not sure where you walk, but I'm hoping your scenery is great. I've walked and discovered the more "up and down" terrain you make yourself do, the more calories you burn. After a while, what is a real challenge makes you stronger. Plus, because you're not hitting the pavement hard (as in running) you'll be able to do it far longer in your life.
Good on you!

(2,135 posts)A: The local shopping mall, where it's 0.81 miles a lap around it's corridors. I usually stop after the second and eat an orange or buy a bag of apple slices from Subway along with some unsweetened tea if I forget the orange.
B: The place where I walked today was around the neighborhood where I live. It's outside of Columbia, MO and the perfect mixture of houses and countryside to give me varied scenery. I had my MP3 player with me and I was listening to some podcasts that I regularly follow. Not a whole lot of hills. I also just checked and saw that I can stretch it to five miles at the most without doubling back too much.

(1,363 posts)The older you get the worse it gets. I got type 2 diabetes, and started (TOO DAMNED LATE!) walking. I walked off the extra 130 pounds I was packing around. that was 10 years ago and I've kept most of it off. (Thanks for NOTHING, winter of 2013-14!) I try to get in 2 miles a day, and if you can do that 4 times a week, you'll lose the weight! I'm rootin' for you! Keep it going!

(2,135 posts)and in good health save for the weight. Well, that and the ankle I wear a brace on because I was overworking it when I first started. My mom, who is over 60, is also losing weight by eating better and walking in her building on breaks during work. She finally broke the 200 lb barrier a month ago.
As for how much, I generally average about 2.5 miles about four times a week. I generally weigh myself once a week using a digital scale at the mall. Last time I checked, I was at 377.

(1,363 posts)See your doc, but they put me on 120 carbs ...spread out over the day, and I have learned to eat lean. I don't eat anything white...bread, potatoes, rice, etc... nothing starchy, but I do make a killer no crust sugar free pumpkin pie. Keep up the good work, you'll feel better and you'll live a better life.

(42,302 posts)I developed a stress fracture in one foot when I started walking some years back. A year later, plantar fasciatis in the other. That's when my podiatrist let me know I had very high arches and had to take it seriously.
I now own only a handful of shoes but they work for me. It's made a world of difference.

(34,136 posts)Basically you try to walk the number of miles as in the journeys of the Lord of the Rings. You don't have to walk as many miles a day and there are places to track where you are on the journey. I think it would make walking more fun, especially if you're stuck walking the same places everyday or on a treadmill.

I need to get a good pedometer so I can track how far I've walked each day!

(2,135 posts)While my mom managed to do one before her ankle began hurting her too bad. Diet kinda went out the window as we bought a pizza to eat while watching Wrestlemania XXX on the WWE Network, but it'll be normal today.
