The Deathwatch Beetle

The deathwatch beetle is a woodboring beetle that taps or ticks to attract mates. It can be heard in old wooden buildings on summer nights. It is associated with quiet, sleepless nights and vigils, and the superstitious hear an omen of death in it's noises. Deathwatch beetles have a famous mention in Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart.

I combined this with the Victorian love of fairies and their artworks that seem obsessed with turning insects into little cherubs. Original 8" x 10" Acrylic on acid free paper.

I do not make the chainmaille jewelry, my husband does. They are spun and cut and woven by hand, no soldering required.
