The Squire of Dorrish

The Squire of Dorrish, from an ancient Devonshire family, returning home drunk on a winter night fell from his horse near a brook at the bottom of a hill and was killed sometime in the early 18th century. His spirit tries to get to his house at the top of the hill at the rate of a "cockstride every moon", and over a bridge as narrow as a sword edge. Whenever he falls off, he returns to the foot of the hill to start over again. What may happen when he reaches his front door, none can foresee. The house is now gone.
