...."See Emily Play" was not such a bad song, I had both songs on a cassette tape "The Best Of Pink Floyd" which was a silly title for that tape seeing as how I bought it in 1971. Perhaps it was the "best" they had done prior to that date. "Eleanor Rigby" is by far the superior song from the choices you give. I think you compare apples and oranges here as the two bands were doing different styles of music. That said I was a fan of Pink Floyd starting from the moment I saw them at this show in Berlin Germany in 1971. By this time they were moving away from Mr. Barrett's influence and were morphing into the "Acid" sound they would become famous for.

BTW I have two Syd Barrett CDs in my collection. I bought them in the early '90s, listened to them only once and have found no reason to listen to them since. I could not even tell you how they sound but I suspect that I did not care for the music. I kept them only for nostalgia purposes. I do not know how Mr. Barrett faired, I guess he had some mental issues and I hope things did not go too bad for him. I believe members of Pink Floyd kept track of and cared for him and that's about all I can recollect regarding Mr. Barrett. As to the song "Arnold Layne", if memory serves it was written about an actual person and his kinky hobby of stealing women's undergarments from clotheslines in and around the neighborhood of an all girls school. I am not sure if he actually did get caught.

The 1971 show I detailed above was my first ever concert. I have long ago lost count of how many concerts I have seen performed by other bands but that Pink Floyd show was easily the most memorable, ( well except the time I saw Rod Stewart and the Faces get their butts kicked by an angry audience). Sadly that was the only time I ever seen Pink Floyd.

I went out and purchased that tape "The Best Of Pink Floyd" the very next day after that show and was pretty disappointed because those songs sounded nothing like what I had heard because it was I think mostly Syd Barrett material. It turned out that we had been treated that night to a pre-release of their album 'Umma-Gumma' and a few other songs like 'Echos' which would turn up on later albums. Btw tickets for that show were all of $2.75 and across town the band Chicago was playing at a larger venue.
