The Facers

There was a club of drinkers in the 17th century that called themselves "Facers". They would rather spend a shilling on ale than two pence on meat. They observed a rule amongst themselves that anyone who left ale in his cup should have it tossed onto his face. To save their faces and clothes, they prudently sucked the liquor clean out of their cups.
