Update on my Goal to rewatch "Lost" on Netflix

So about a week ago I made this post about watching the 6 seasons of "Lost" on Netflix. I only got thru 1st season and half of second season when I realized that this show is just downright AWFUL. Posted my thoughts here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1018608245

So after watching a few more of season #2 and realizing someone could nuke the island, kill off everyone and I'd probably stand up and cheer I decided it's probably best not to continue watching the renaming seasons.

HOWEVER...

I was reading about the Lost episodes on Wiki and realize they now time travel back to the 70s and other time periods and I realized I really didn't want to watch any of that. But then I read about some of the episodes of season #6 where they shows what happened to the people of Oceanic 815 if the plan actually landed and I thought "mmmm that actually sounds interesting". So I decided to skip the rest of season #2 along with seasons 3-5 and just start on season #6 - see how it all ends.

I've watched 4 episodes and here are my thoughts on just those episodes

  • I see these idiots still argue about guns. Really why couldn't someone since the end of season #2 until now just take all the guns and toss them into a giant lava pit because my guess is somewhere on that island is a giant lava pit since it seems everything else is on the damn island.
  • I'm still disturbed that there is an island about the size of Nova Scotia out there in the Pacific that no one can find. My guess is that is where that Malaysian Plane disappeared too.
  • Whomever plays Claire has the easiest lines to memorize because all she says time in and time out is (doing her best loud whiny Australian voice) *Where's my BAAAAAAA-BBBBBEEEEEEEEE. I want my BAAAAAA-BBEEEEEEEBBEEEEEEEEE.* And I figured out the reason why she has bangs and all that hair around her face is that during her time of absence on the island she manged to find a plastic surgeon to fix something on her face because her face looks different from when she was on in earlier episodes.
  • I was never more happier than when Sayid killed those two idiots running the temple. I will say that Sayid is the one person who I enjoy watching on the show.
  • So in the first 2 seasons Jack never once mentioned 'Oh I have a teenage son'. Really how the heck did that happen.
  • So Jacob is some Angel/Seer that brought everyone to the island but now he is dead so Locke is that Angel/Seer. And Locke is trying to find his next replacement. Am I right? And what dumbass on the Lost writing team came up with that plot line.

My guess is this, when the show first aired and you'd watch one episode at a time -perhaps the show made sense in some profound way. And you'd usually have a week (or sometimes 2-6 weeks or an entire summer depending on how ABC aired it all) to convince yourself that 'yes that's really messed up and makes no sense but I will now accept it as good quality television. But when you binge watch (I'd watch 2-4 episodes a night while I house clean or what not) your mind doesn't have enough time to clear itself of the craziness.

So at this point I think I am done watching. I just saw the Sayid sideways show and even Sayid isn't enough for me to finish off the rest of the season. I hope that somehow he is reunited with Shannon so he can live happily ever after but I hope the rest just are stuck forever on that island!

1. I have to agree with you... I watched it "live" but by the last season, I was pretty much "over" it.

I can honestly say that I'd have little desire to watch it again.

What was it with the damned polar bears, btw. Was that EVER explained (or as I recall just sort of dropped)?

2. I know the cages where they kept Sawyer and Kate in the beginning of season #3

Polar bears were brought to the Island by the DHARMA Initiative, who kept them in cages at the Hydra station, on Hydra Island. (The World of the Others) According to Pierre Chang, because polar bears possess keen memory and adaptability instincts, they were prime candidates for studies in electromagnetic research. After training at the Hydra and solving the cage fish biscuit puzzles, the bears were fitted with a tracking collar, tranquilized, and taken to the Orchid where they were put in the familiar cold climate of the Frozen wheel chamber to push the wheel and be transported through space time. (The New Man in Charge) Some of the polar bears survived the Purge, after which they were freed from their cages and swam to the main Island. (Access Granted) After the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 in 2004, survivors of the crash occasionally encountered and were threatened by the bears. Charlotte Lewis discovered the skeleton and tracking collar of one of the experimented polar bears in Tunisia, where the Exit was located, that same year.

Here's my thought.

It would have been too obvious if they had put something you'd normally find in a tropical climate like a raging Tiger or a Hippo or even crocodiles. But the writers figured 'Hey we put a crazy large animal in here that you might find on a tropical climate then the viewers won't know right away how fucked up this island is'. And I think the only animal out there that is large and can be vicious and definitely not found on tropical islands is the Polar Bear. So the real reason they were on the show - to mess with our minds and create discussion as to 'Why were Polar Bears on this island'

3. I watched the show for the characters. The story/plot was secondary.

I found something to like with almost all of the characters, including Jack and Kate. The Desmond/Penny relationship was wonderful and the Locke/Ben rivalry was very engaging as Ben remains one of my all time favorite characters ever.
