It was believed that fern seed was invisible, and if anyone could gather and wear this seed he would be invisible, too. To make it more difficult, fern seed could only be gathered on Midsummer's Eve at midnight if you wanted to maintain its powers of invisibility.

Ferns don't have seeds. They have spores. Can't have seeds if you don't have flowers, and ferns don't produce flowers.
