showed up walking around with anti-Iraq war t-shirts and one of the guys

and asked us all to leave. We were astonished. Several of us had shopping
bags, and had purchased something to eat. We were escorted out
along with the t-shirt guys.

I was FURIOUS and so were several other members of the group.
We went quietly because one of our members was a med student
and she was fearful of getting arrested if we resisted in any way.

We had finished a lot of our planning at that point and went on to have a successful
fund raiser that my husband and I hosted at our house.

for dressing like a hippie and especially for wearing anti-war slogans on my clothing. This was back in the days when the older generation, many of whom had fled from the Soviet forces that overran Estonia in 1944, vehemently hated everything Communist. To their minds, anyone who protested the war in Vietnam was a Commie. Two old guys escorted me to the front door and told me not to come back.

I knew I was asking for trouble when I went there dressed like that, but I was a rebel at heart.

Because the majority of Esto-Americans were right-wing Nixon-loving Republicans, I was happy to stay away from them for most of the next 40 years. Then I met a couple of folks who were progressive Democrats, and they in turn introduced me to a few others.

By some good fortune and perseverance they also let me back in twice and I managed to graduate.

I've never had much trouble telling people what I think. Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm not.

But I'm not as bad as my mom at her worst. She can get kicked out churches.

That's how our family ended up Quakers. My mom could say what she had to say, people would listen respectfully, and then move on.

Other churches were not so accepting.

71. I flunked two classes in college.
Wed Apr 30, 2014, 09:19 PM
Apr 2014

Once for fighting with a teaching assistant.

The TA and I were having an, um, heated debate when he started throwing stuff at me. I don't know why. I told him his data was bullshit, not that his work was bullshit. He had nothing to do with the data, he was not the one who had fabricated it. Well fabricated it was. $$$

Unfortunately the campus police already knew me by name, not him. I always had a friendly relationship with the campus police. I was mostly harmless, occasionally homeless, an interesting break from their usual dreary duties of drunks, date rapes, overdoses, etc.. They'd pick me up for things like jogging with bloody bare feet at two o'clock in the morning, dumpster diving, or sleeping in my car, the library, classrooms... I'd also show up in places where I wasn't expected to be, and people might eventually say, "Hey, wait a minute, who are you?" sometimes after I'd been there a few days and was getting a bit ripe. Anyways, I wasn't allowed to take the final in that class. The university let me repeat the course, different TA, different professor, both more cynical sorts, and I aced it.

Another time I flunked a hard science class. I could pick up day work moving furniture for eight or ten dollars an hour sometimes (gasoline was less than a dollar a gallon then...) and I'd missed too many lectures to keep up. I did pass my paleontology class however, even though I couldn't tell you a damned thing about Foraminifera today. But the professor of that class helped me get back into school for my third try and I didn't get into any more trouble after that. Well, except for when the people I was living with moved away without telling me, without paying our rent, so I just lived in the empty apartment for two months with the door to my room locked, sleeping on the floor, ready to jump out the window with all my stuff if I heard anything. One day I returned "home" and strangers were moving in. Sigh. I had left everything in the apartment clean and spotless, it was part of my ritual. And that was a better experience than I'd had living in my car in the church parking lot...

I have much more recent Groucho Marx "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member" experiences; the parking valets leave my old car in the same lot the dishwashers park in so as not to offend the BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus cars, but if I ever die crazy in a cardboard box with newspaper insulation that's okay with me. I've always done what seems to be the right thing to do at the time.

Even when it turns out to be wrong.

...we had a gig booked at an Old Town Pasadena CA billiards/rock club.

We set up our equipment, and I went to one of the bars and asked if there was a band discount for a beer.

Barkeep said, "yeah, 2 bucks" (instead of 3 or 4 or whatever).

I pay the 2 bucks, when, as I turn around, the BOOKER of bands is standing there and sez..."there is no band discount on the beer!"

"Pay or get out!"

I said, "I'm the drummer in the band which is about to play. I'm not paying anything more for the fuckin beer!"

She said "pay the (additional amount, whatever it was) or you are bannned from playing at this club - after tonight."

We played, the audience loved it, and the "booker" was booking the next gig the moment we left the stage.

Which I refused to play.

Also, this particular booker had a history of calling the Pasadena CA cops on the bands that smoked cannabis in the alley behind the club.

Me and a buddy had a grand thought a day before school opened. We would cement all the doors and windows shut and see if the school could open on time.

They did not and school opened a day late.

We thought we were scott free and got away with it. About a week later the MP's show up at school, take my buddy and I out of class and bring us to the Provost Marshall where his father was their and my step father was there looking like they had just been chewed out and was gonna pass in on.

I was under the rule, you'll never take me alive coppers! but within 5 minutes they pulled the "your buddy told us everything" routine, and our master plan fell to pieces.

We were both expelled from the school and we had to go to a secondary school for the entire 7th grade. I think I just got off groundation for it last week, and I just turned 39!

We do have a friend that is now a teacher there and that our story is part of the "lore" at the school.

Back in the early 70s, my boyfriend and I were traveling across the country and our van conked out on the highway in St. Louis. Cops pulled up after a few minutes and called for a tow truck. We were taken to a service station at the top of the next exit where it was determined to be some minor thing which was quickly repaired.

The cops waited and when we were leaving they told us to get out of the state because they didn't want "our kind" there. Then they escorted us to the border. "Our kind" was long-haired hippies and the van had a hand-painted picture (mine) of a dragon with a sun on his belly being attacked by a lady on a flying unicorn. The van's name was Sun Fighter.

Never been back to that state, no siree.

36. Banned from KPFT in 1995 (local Pacifica station.)
Wed Apr 30, 2014, 09:29 AM
Apr 2014

That was back when the national and local stations were reorganizing to a more corporate radio sound, getting rid of what they called "crazy quilt programming." In other words, they wanted clean, homogenized, and thus sterile, programming.

I didn't like it, and often argued with Garland Ganter about their programming and station decisions and policies (I had my own show for several years prior to the changes.) I remember an argument I had with him at a volunteer meeting where it took literally twenty minutes to dig through all the rhetoric and get him to admit that whatever latest policy change was indeed a "political" decision, and had no basis in reality.

They then manufactured a reason to get me thrown off my time slot (having too many people at the station after hours.) I knew it was manufactured, because the guy that took my place turned his opportunity to have my slot into a reason to throw a party. I know this because I watched and counted the number of people that went into the station (it was over fifteen; I had been thrown out for having three other people in the station and on my show.) And it didn't matter what I had witnessed, they didn't want me at the station any longer, even as a voluntary producer of other friends' shows.

Finally, I showed up at one of the monthly and open to the public station meetings, only to be barred from entering the station by Garland (he physically barred my entry to the building, which is an old house in the middle of Montrose) and told never to come back, that I was banned from the premises.

Thankfully, that corporate takeover was squashed, and I've since been allowed back at the station, though if I ever have a radio show again, I'll do it online

38. Yep. I was banned from substitute teaching at a local school district.
Wed Apr 30, 2014, 09:52 AM
Apr 2014

Reason: because a brand new student, on her first day, took a video of me politely and with a smile
telling several students congregating in the back of the room that they needed to hurry to the cafeteria
because they only had 30 minutes for lunch. The student posted the video on youtube.

Yep, seriously, that's what I did on the video. And that's all I did.

I also told the student she should put her cell phone in her locker, because the students were not permitted
at that time to have them in class (but of course they all did and they all blatantly ignored the rules and none
of them were ever disciplined for it).

I was shown the video by a security guard, who was very stern with me as he showed it to me.... one month
after this had taken place. I said, what's the issue? He didn't give me a straight answer. Then the substitute
service I worked through said I couldn't work in that district anymore, and I quote " because a student had
taken a video of me and posted it on the internet'. I had to explain to them that I wasn't nude or screaming
or foul or doing anything other than my duty on the video (which was removed from youtube before I ever
knew it existed).

But, as we all know, the way to correct student behavior is to discipline the teacher.

On edit: several other teachers, regular teachers, have now been suspended for the same 'behaviors'.

45. Old joke...
Wed Apr 30, 2014, 12:36 PM

There were these three couples; one elderly, one middle aged, and one newly-wed that wanted to join a church. So the minister tells them that in order to be members they must abstain from sex for two whole weeks. After two weeks, the minister asks the elderly couple if they had abstained, and they replied, 'Yes, no problem!' So the minister says, 'Welcome to the church!'

Then he asks the middle aged couple the same question, and they said, 'Well, after one week, the husband had to sleep on the couch, but we made it!' So the minister says to them, 'Welcome to the church!'

Then the minister asks the newly wed couple if they had abstained from sex for two weeks. The husband says, 'We were unable to abstain, on the third day, my wife dropped a can of corn and when she bent over to pick it up, LUST and PASSION overcame me'. So the minister says, 'I'm sorry, but you are both banned from this church!' To this the husband replies, 'That's O.K., we already got banned from Safeway, too.

The first one was for being a smart-ass:

Librarian - "The library is not for standing around and talking."

Me - "What if I sit down?"

The second one was for throwing a punch in self-defense. I must have been a better tipper than the guy who started the fight because the bartender intervened and they tossed him out and let me back in.

Oh yea, I was thrown out of a boy scout troop because my family didn't go to church.

58. I got kicked out of the Soviet Officers Club in East Berlin
Wed Apr 30, 2014, 06:31 PM
Apr 2014

...and yes, I was supposed to be there.

Many, many moons ago, between Reunification and the end of Berlin Occupation, the commanders of the US and Russian Berlin Brigades decided to allow a little bit of supervised social interaction between our forces. In December 1990, the Russians decided to hold a Christmas party and invited the US Commander Berlin to it. The USCOB had a previous engagement so he asked and received permission to send some of his enlisted soldiers. Naturally, he called my unit. "Oh, and make sure to wear different brass...we don't want them finding out we sent five intelligence officers to their party and feeling like we took advantage of them or anything." So we put on quartermaster and military police brass and went to East Berlin.

Our fearless leader, whose hobby was plotting the order-of-battle for the Red Army in World War II, knew everything there was to know about the Soviet Army EXCEPT where their officers club was...so we left way too early, got there an hour early, and were asked to go away and come back when it was time to start the party.

I was an army brat then, went to Berlin American High. I once went with my father through Check Point Charlie to East Berlin to shop for antiques. I still own one of those antiques. Coincidentally my dad, a cook for the military hospital, got to spend some time just like you did doing an official dining event with Soviet Army soldiers in East Berlin too. Another time my dad got to cook a birthday meal and cake for that NAZI guy that was imprisoned at Spandau, I forget the guys name but he was pretty famous. Oh and I walked on the frozen Wansee... and there was that place near the ice skating ring at the Europa center where we used to get the best hash or acid.....yeah I know I didn't always do my dad proud. It has been decades but I will always cherish my teen years in Berlin!

78. Rudolf Hess was the Nazi

Pretty much the second Hess died they were on the phone with a demolition company to tear down Spandau Prison - it cost nearly a million marks per year to keep this one guy locked up and they didn't want any neo-Nazi demonstrations.

83. Yeah, that would be the Nazi my dad cooked a birthday meal for.

I just did a little research on Herr Hess. He was ranked the 3rd most powerful man in Nazi Germany and was a close friend/associate to Hitler from just after WWI till his flight to Scotland. Wow, my dad cooked a meal for that guy! All this time I never knew. I do not remember if my dad said that he actually met him but I do recall him saying that food services for the guy rotated equally between the Russians, French, British and Americans and that he was the only prisoner in Spandau.

I read that Hess believed that his food was being poisoned, I assure you that when it came to my dad's cooking Mr. Hess should have counted himself lucky! My dad was quite the chef-a chef the army presented with plenty of awards and one in high demand. (He was once courted by the General of Ft. Lewis to be his personal chef, it would have meant living in the fancy quarters behind the Generals mansion for all of us but my dad wasn't into that sort of thing).

I don't know what you thought of Berlin but I loved it there. We lived near the Tiergarten but I spent more time wandering the city than I did at home. That place was just one big long adventure for me as a teen. I actually contemplated running away and leaving my family for good the day we had to fly out from Templehof, I think I was 16 or maybe just turned 17 at the time....now I will be 60 this year (insert big sigh here). Sorry about the reminiscing but I have not thought about Berlin in a while.

I think that's it. If I think of something else, I'll add it.

60. Yeah, got kicked out of Darwin's Theory, a dive bar in Anchorage.
Wed Apr 30, 2014, 06:58 PM
Apr 2014

I liked Darwin's for:
1. Red Hots - shots of cinnamon schnapps with a dash of Tabasco.
Great on a cold night.
2. The clientele. Really interesting mix. College professors, airline pilots (me), oil patch workers, geology engineers, etc., etc.
3. The staff. All female ranging from 'cute' to downright gorgeous.
(Sexist pig!)
4. FREE POPCORN!

There were a couple of rules at Darwin's.
1. You didn't overtly hit on the staff. 'Mild' flirting was OK.
2. You didn't cross staff.
They had the ultimate and final word.

If a waitress or the bartender told you to leave, you left.
If not, Darwin would step in, and that would not be good.

One night I was chatting with a guy (complete stranger) next to me at the bar.
It was that kind of place.
He made some remark to the bartender that she misunderstood.
"OUT!"
He tried to explain.
Darwin came over.
"She says you're out, you're OUT!"
I tried to intervene and explain.
"OK, buster. You're out too!"

I left, but boy was I pissed.
I boycotted the place for a couple of weeks, but I couldn't stay away.
The place was just so much damn fun.

Wed Apr 30, 2014, 11:41 PM
Apr 2014

Thrown out of Jr. High School for tear-gassing classroom which caused the evacuation and shutting down of that wing of the school-(the other wing of the school only lost the administration offices and the nurses office but that was only indirectly my fault)

Thrown out of music venue with musicians for disrespecting religious material.

Thrown out of different music venue with same musicians for squirting too much fake blood around the place....and.... disrespecting religious material.

Thrown out of Dennys with same musicians for....well they just didn't like us I guess, we didn't do nothin' and the cops agreed by arresting nobody....but they escorted us out anyway.

If details are requested I will be happy to provide.

Oh and almost forgot: Fired from/quit job but that is a tale I don't recall the latter details enough about to discuss.... I will say that it truly did not start out as my fault and everyone there EXCEPT the guy who fired me/I quit to, encouraged me to do what I did so being the lover of democracy that I am....... well like I said there are bits I am not so clear on so it's best I tell no more about it.

FWIW none of you really know me but the above testimonial makes me sound like someone I am not! Ask fellow DUer Opiate 69, he knows me personally and he'll be the first to tell ya that I am pretty much harmless too!

actually they refused to serve us more drinks, insisting we were too drunk even though we'd only had two over a few hours. We were being loud and silly though, celebrating a friend's last night in grad school. It sucked because we had been going there for years. In case anyone knows Austin, it was Trudy's.

I'm blocked from a DU group, the "men's" group. I wouldn't even have thought about it except people upthread were talking about groups they've been banned from.
