The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI was challenged by my brother to make a "Hits of 1987" CD of stuff I already own.
I took up the challenge, and pulled up the Billboard Hot 100 for the year, and this is what my CD contains:
1. Walk Like An Egyptian - Bangles
2. La Bamba - Los Lobos
3. Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House
4. With or Without You - U2
5. Mony Mony - Billy Idol
6. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
7. Open Your Heart - Madonna
8. U Got the Look - Prince
9. Who's That Girl - Madonna
10. Causing a Commotion - Madonna
11. I Heard a Rumor - Bananarama
12. La Isla Bonita - Madonna
13. Luka - Suzanne Vega
14. Sign O' the Times - Prince
15. Change of Heart - Cyndi Lauper
16. Something So Strong - Crowded House
17. Fight for Your Right - Beastie Boys
18. The One I Love - REM
19. It's A Sin - Pet Shop Boys
I had so much fun that I ended up doing one for every year from 1981-1990.
Whenever I have some free time, I might take on the 1990s!
on edit: One thing this exercise taught me: I own more mainstream music than I thought I did!

(13,386 posts)A lot of the Pop music since then just doesn't compare on the fun scale nor with the sheer volume/number of tunes. While there has been some good Pop music in the 1990s, the 2000s and the 2010s, they all pale to the latter half of the 1980s. Two other great songs from 1987 for your disc are "Alone" by Heart and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" by Whitney Houston. Your list right now is still very, very good.

(26,874 posts)And, I agree, although I would also include most of the rest of the decade as well.
I remember those two songs you mention very well, but I don't own them. I was limited to stuff that I already owned.
To the 80s!!!

(13,386 posts)That song has definitely stood the test of time. It is worth purchasing if you do not already own it.

(21,020 posts)Whitesnake all those years ago, but just lately have begun to like them.
Another song from 1987, which is definitely on my Top Ten list of favorite songs is "Still of the Night".
Although I can't explain why, I think the instrumental interlude in the middle of the song (starting around 2 minutes in) is...well... sort of erotic.

(26,874 posts)Didn't you say you thought you'd be the oldest one there?
How did that turn out?
Arugula Latte
(50,566 posts)And I was far from being the oldest one there (I'm late 40s). There was a very wide range of ages. My husband started chatting with a couple on our way out and they must have been in their mid-70s!
But, ya know, in the scheme of things
We are fresh strawberries
Fresh burst of red strawberries
Ripe, turning riper in the bowl
We will soon be rotten
We will all be forgotten
Half remembered rumours of the old
Hey, how was the Pet Shop Boys concert?

It was a really creative show with lots of visual effects and costume changes. The lasers were just incredible! I felt like I was in a spider web!
I was down front, almost right at the stage, and got enveloped when the confetti cannons went off.
Neil's voice is exactly the same, although not perfect. But then, he's not really a singer as much as a front man/ performer.
The crowd was very mixed. Lots of our generation but also a lot of younger folks! I was a little surprised by that.
I'd see them again in a heartbeat!

(50,566 posts)I've been to a couple of 80s dance nights at a huge nearby club and there is always a wide range of ages. I think about how the "kids" dancing to, say, "Sweet Dreams" weren't even born when we were listening to this stuff in high school and college. But, I like music from all decades. I think so much of the stuff coming out now is fantastic, especially on the alternative stations. I hate that "the only decade that had good music was the decade in which I was young" mentality.

(26,874 posts)I always wonder if I'm going to run into any of my students.
I'm never sure if that would make them think I'm cool, or if they would suddenly decide they weren't hip enough if their old teacher was there.

(8,646 posts)What a trip that was, LOL!
I used to own a ton of CDs but alas - I left them at my ex-h's when we split and they mysteriously disappeared before I could gather everything up. I'm rebuilding via iTunes, but only a few must-haves at a time. Sadly for 1987, I just realized I haven't purchased very many from that year, LOL! I have Carrie by Europe, Wanted Dead or Alive and Livin' on a prayer by Bon Jovi, and Bad by Michael Jackson. That's it, 4 songs, despite that year being a pretty transformative year in my life. Which is funny because that means I have a lot less mainstream music than I thought I had, LOL.

(26,874 posts)So sorry to hear about your CD collection loss.
There are not many "things" that I treasure, but my music collection is one of them.
Remind people that a great b-day, or other special occasion gift would be iTunes gift cards!
