St. Giles' Bowl

St. Giles' Bowl was a jug of ale delivered to the condemned prisoners at St. Giles' Hospital while they were en route to be hanged at Tyburn. There is a Yorkshire proverb "He will be hanged for leaving his liquor like the saddler of Bawtry", which started when a convict declined a bowl of ale and was consequently executed just before his reprieve arrived. If he had taken his bowl of ale, his life would have been spared.
